That was a much shorter gap than expected.

No spoilers from me, then. But it is... quite the story. I honestly don't think we could have gotten here if it had stayed on broadcast TV, even if they did have the episode/season count.

I stopped watching mid way through Season 3. I've always been meaning to get back to it because Tom Ellis as Lucifer is a delight. Did it get away from the typical serial crime drama "crime of the week" style?

Yeah pretty much. It still has that to some extent, but it's far less of a focus. You forget sometimes that there's even a case at all.

S3 is definitely suffers from peak broadcast padding. It helped that I didn't start watching until there was already Netflix material so I knew that would stop.

By the final season there is almost no crime of the week. I think there are only two episodes in season 6 with a murder that gets solved by the end of the episode, and one of them doesn't involve Chloe or Lucifer. That's one of the aspects of the last season I don't think we would have seen had the show not gone to Netflix. Thank goodness they dropped it, because it really would have ruined the way the ending unfolds if they had to solve a murder every episode.

Season 3 dragged out several episodes too long and ends up by far the weakest season. The overall quality goes way up after, but I feel like some of the "cases of the day" feel weak due to their insistence on paralleling the main storyline in some way with all of them. This is compensated to some extent because they are clearly are not the primary focus in many episodes of s4 and s5, and they all but vanish in s6.

There's no way broadcast television even tries to get anywhere near as in depth as Netflix went, though. Never would've "gotten away with it", as it were.
