I think if you sign up to be a cop you give up certain freedoms while on the job.

And that camera? Stays on 100% when you have that badge and gun in your hands.

All they'd have to do is hold their hand over the body cam. Even with naked footage, cops typically get away with wrongdoing.

George Floyd was filmed being murdered by a third party camera and we just barely, just barely got his murderer to be held accountable.

Just institute a $5000 fine on the cop if a body cam is covered up, lost, damaged, or turned off during an arrest or if a firearm is used. No exceptions.

Bodycams should be on 100% of the time while a cop is on duty (unless it needs to be off for a genuine reason eg a confidential briefing). Any breach of this should be punishable.

This isnt feasible at all. You do realize that the bodycams have batteries right? So if a shift all started at the same time and the batteries all died at the same time they would all have to go back to the station to charge the batteries and thus not be allowed to respond to calls.

Or just keep a spare camera charging in their car and switch them out halfway through a shift?

This board loves having the same police conversations every couple days. The same people making the same points to the same crowds.

that being said, there is already some departments that have body cameras that turn on when a gun is used. Mine has a feature that will turn on all body cameras around me

shit costs a ton of money which is why I assume a lot of departments dont have it. Especially like right now where everyone wants funds pulled

They do. Not like, "here's our mortar gun and here's our turret gun" tanks. But super heavily armored vehicles that a dozen officers can move around on tanks? Which are still tanks, btw?

Yeah, there's more than a few departments with one of them.

There was something like this in the Watchmen show on HBO. They had to call dispatch to get a release on their weapons.

First cop that tried got turned to Swiss cheese because they didnt release his gun in time.

I think its a good idea. If you kill someone with your cam off that is murder to me. No reason police should be turning cams off.

You mean move around on treads, not tanks. Those are not tanks and are considered armored personnel carriers, since they do not have guns affixed to them which is part of the definition of a tank.

I don't know if they still do but when I was in high school my city's PD had an honest to God, tread and turret military tank, which they showed us during a high school volunteer day. The officer said it was military surplus, that it had never been used, had no shells for the cannon, and only one person in the department had any tank operator training, but they still had it.

While we're at it, any cop who tries to obstruct, punish, confiscate, delete, or damage a recording of a confrontation/ arrest should face a steep penalty as well.

If the party recording the incident is in fact obstructing or preventing the officer from doing their job, they can face a fine of course (they already do). But being a safe distance away while recording a scenario should be 100% uninhibited by police.

The detained person(s) should also have the right to record, and if a recording device is in use and is tampered with our damaged by police, then that officer faces the same penalties.
