In the wake of the leaked FFIX Remake, and the recent deluge of remakes and remasters and remakes the company is not capable of producing a successful new idea and lives on the dregs of Sakaguchi's legacy. They rely on Nostalgia (FFXIV, FFVII, DQ XI) to reel in users while their new creations (FFXV) absolutely bomb.

It doesn't help that their main visionaries (Kitase, Nomura, et al.) are hacks and really do not create good products. 15 years and I am still saying that Nomura has never been given a good opportunity since... KH2. Guy can make a good game but he's Kojima-tier when it comes to actually releasing a product.

They really only have Hori creating any real product (DQXI) and that had like 4 different versions and he puts out a game a decade, plus the obvious is that he's getting old.

I mean pokemons main audience is always children but they are still riding gen 1 like no ones business

I've never liked the FF or DQ series, their main lines.
But they've had some great side projects like NieR and Octopath Traveler.

The best of their team left and formed Monolith Soft like 2 decades ago, though. Putting out some of the best games of the past several generations like Baten Kaitos, Xenoblade, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Doesn't help that Square gave the man too many projects at once tbh. Just look at the time period of FF Versus XIII. IIRC, they kept moving Nomura around to help out on other projects.

Not to mention that while Nomura can make a good game... his stories are awful.

With all that said, some of Square's main visionaries and directors are capable of great things, if they are reigned in properly. They are extremely similar to people like George Lucas.

I mean, not really. You don't have to have played past FFs to get the references and homages, tons of people who started playing XIV this year have never played another FF.

Also, Yoshi-P is producing XVI, and I could not be more excited.

Just wanna say this applies to a ton of companies too.

Just look at Capcom, SEGA, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, etc. While there are some "new" ideas, we still see a ton of remakes, remasters, sequels, or improved spiritual successors. Even a lot of indie games just focus on perfecting already established genres.

I mean, there have even been leaks of Naughty Dog developing a remake of TLOU... Like remasters I can understand, but remakes of games that aren't even a decade old and have barely aged? :/

They just published Nier, the first one was developed by Cavia, Automata was developed by Platinum, and the remake of the first one was developed by Toylogic. So SE didn't even make Nier and shouldn't be given credit for them.
