I've seen both Gettysburg (one of my favorite films) and God and Generals (absolute trash) in the theater. Both were long enough to have intermission.

I love the reason for making that film. Almost makes me hope they included one of those 'cigarette burn' frames near the end, like in Fight Club.

Yep, the reason behind it is why I wanted to watch it. To support such an important experimental film.

Hmm isn't part of the point that no one would have wanted to or should have ever had to watch it lol? I wouldn't say experimental film as much as an exercise in giving the middle finger to ratings people

There are some who consider Twin Peaks: The Return to be a movie, due to the screenplay being written as a single film, and its 18 hours long or thereabouts. Other TV miniseries, like Berlin Alexanderplatz and Heimat, are also considered single films.

If TV miniseries are disqualified, then its probably La Flor, which is 13 1/2 hours long.

Berlin Alexanderplatz doesn't seem very movie-like to me. It's very episodic with a through-line.

The episodic structure of most television series of that sort is itself derived from film serials, dating back to the early days of the medium, so the episodic nature doesn't really conflict with that classification - if anything, TV miniseries are carrying on an otherwise rareified cinematic tradition.

I think people so readily consider things like The Dekalog and Berlin Alexanderplatz to be movies primarily because their creators were filmmakers, and because these works utilize familiar tools, methods and performers, and build on themes they had established in that career.

The blurring of the lines between TV and movie is pretty interesting.
