Either Kanto or Alola. Kanto has nostalgia going for it, but it's also just a solid set of designs before and after evolution. It also has two extra picks in Pikachu and Eevee, which are both great too. Alola's trio is very cute until they evolve. Mostly Incineroar ruins it. I've never been big on Primarina either, but it's not that bad. Ghost archer owl is cool though.

Gen 2 trio is pretty great, but my fav are the Unova starters.

Possibly a little biased, because those were the ones that came out as I was getting older, so I could see every little detail of these games as they were being released and the 6 months they were first in Japan.

Still remember the dumb fan-names for the starters, since we didn't have English names yet - Pignition, Wotter, and Smugleaf.

Umm, excuse me? "Wotter" was Derpderp. And Pignition is practically the second form's official name anyway.

I tend to dislike one or two of the starters usually. I guess Hoenn but due to the Mystery Dungeon games. I went with Torchic as the partner and then it just stuck, partner was always Torchic. Except Gates to Infinity CAUSE IT DIDN'T HAVE TORCHIC.

Either Hoenn or Sinnoh. Hoenn is the only gen where I really like all of the base forms, and Sinnoh is the only gen where I really like all of the final evolutions.

I think most of us can agree that Unova had the worst set though. Snivy's Smugleaf meme was the only redeeming quality that any of them had whatsoever.

I think by process of elimination, Kanto has to be my favourite set.

Every other generation has either a base form or an evolution that I'm really not fond of.

Gens 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7 all have really strong groups without any obvious dogs(though some are stronger than others, of course). Gen 2, well, not many people like the Chikorita line, they've nerfed Typhlosion into the ground, and Feraligator is basically discount Gyarados you know, the thing that evolves from one of the hundreds of Magikarp you'll fish up. Gen 5...all the final evos suck balls. Gen 8...I don't really like the Sobble line at all.

Picking the first four because those are the ones I'm most familiar with:

I'd say 2 > 1 > 4 > 3.

I kinda like Mudkip design-wise, but the only real saving grace in that lineup is Torchic. DPPt has two really good ones, but Chimchar kinda lets them all down.

The first generation are probably the best from both a design and gameplay standpoint, but the gen 2 starters are just so good. Like Totodile suffers from Doofy Mid-Evolution Syndrome like Charmeleon, Torchic and pretty much all of gen 4, and Typhlosion isn't much to write home about - but all three starters are adorable and fucking awesome, Cyndaquil makes up for a lame evolutionary line with a truly kickass line of fire moves, Feraligatr is fucking awesome and even if I'm not the biggest fan of Meganium, it's a decent capper to one of the cutest starter evolutionary lines ever.

Like the first gen is probably better in some respects, it's simple and they really know how to fill a niche. But I just adore gen 2 for the designs, and for the advantages those starters got with that generation's expanded moveset. I played Pokemon Yellow recently and both Charizard and Blastoise were on my team - but outside of Charizard eventually getting Flamethrower, there just wasn't a lot to get excited about in their movesets. But Cyndaquil gets a ton of great fire moves, Totodile gets Bite and Crunch on top of two of the best combat HMs in the series, and Chikorita is a crash course on great grass type moves.

I'd put it this way:

In Emerald, I only ever play as Torchic. I've tried the other two, I don't like them. As far as I'm concerned, Torchic is the only viable option.

I only played one Platinum save, and Torterra was fuckin great. But Chimchar and its evolutionary line just bug the fuck out of me visually, and I'm not a big fan of the Piplup evolutions either.

The gen 1 starters are classic, but having revisited them recently, they just don't have a lot of meat to them. Blastoise felt especially lacking. From a design standpoint, they're excellent - they're the mold from which the rest of the series sprang from, and I think they deserve a lot of respect for that. But I'm not too hot on them mechanically.

I would be 100% down to play Pokemon Crystal with any of the three Johto starters. They're not without their foibles and shortcomings, especially when their evolutions come into play, but they are so fun to play as and they look fucking awesome and I love them all.

I will give props to gen 7 though. Rowlett is a fantastic mon, Litten is great and Popplio... well, the hate was overblown, but I do think it's a weak link. That doesn't detract from how great the other two are, though.

Well, if we're getting down to brass tacks...I already summed up Gen 2 to my satisfaction, but..

Gen 1- You have two starters which have been pretty consistently competitively viable in various ways at high levels(Venusaur and Charizard) and one that's been firmly mediocre(Blastoise). They all have stuff going on design-wise that works, a natural progression, good movepools, and they're all respectable options in-game(though obviously Charmander has a bit of a rough time against Brock. But Butterfree or a Nidoran[from Yellow on] patches that right up).

Gen 3- Competitively, Swampert is the star. Blaziken is broken good(to the point of being banned in some formats), but only with its hidden ability(lol Speed Boost). Sceptile is the "weakest" and it's still pretty good. All will be rock-solid as you journey through Hoenn, and, again: they all have pretty strong movepools, allowing them to fill a variety of roles.

Gen 4- Infernape is the clear star here: it was Blaziken 2.0 until they Blaziken got Speed Boost(just lol). But Torterra and Empoleon are both pretty great designs, and blah blah blah. You know what you're getting in this bunch. The fact that they're all dual-types helps make this gen feel a bit different, and only Torterra really has to watch out(it has a miserable time in the ice area with its 4x weakness).

Gen 5- So, yeah. Sometimes dual-typing isn't the best, like when you make the third Fire/Fighting in a row. A lot of people(myself included) envisioned Tepig going in a more quadrapedal direction, but even given its stale typing, Emboar's execution is lacking: its stat distribution is poor, but at least it has a movepool. Serperior is straight trash without its hidden ability(Contrary) to allow it overcome its bizarre stat distribution and non-existant movepool. And Samurott? They made the wrong starter a quadruped, and Samurott's overly-balanced stat spread results in a relatively boring pokemon. They're all good enough in-game, but Unova is full of much better options, IMO.

Gen 6- I'll be real: I didn't really like Kalos at all. But it's not the fault of the starters. Greninja is the competitive darling, but Chesnaught and Delphox are also nifty pokemon. They're all dual-typed, they all fit obvious roles, they all have good stat distributions. They're all great.

Gen 7- I liked Alola better. The starters are also a strong bunch. Decidueye is a lot weird: going from Flying to Ghost...weird. But it works out fine. Primarina is also an elegant design: growing from a clown to a star. I was hard on Incineroar at first: bipedal fire starters are pretty passe, IMO. But just the nugget that it's specifically a heel wrestler and loves hamming it up for the crowd warmed my cold, dead heart. They're all pretty great.
