I'm thinking we've gotten to the point where many people think words are worse than physical violence, so I wanted a poll to ask.

It's obviously the former. But the people that call others slurs don't do it after getting their ass beat, they do it because a person of a different race made them mad.

In scenario 1: Somebody calls you a slur, completely unprovoked, in response you beat the shit out of that person.

In scenario 2: Somebody beats the shit out of you, completely unprovoked, in response you call that person a slur.

In which scenario are you being less moral?

Is it worse to assault somebody for calling you a slur, or slurring somebody for assaulting you?

I'm implying you're trying to create a false scenario to argue that people who hurl slurs at others are doing so for a reason "not as bad" as something else, that you're trying to defend it.

I have you tagged as reasonable, so I really wish you would refrain from putting things into my mouth that I literally did not say.

I take it as a given that both slurs and physical assault are bad. It is a premise of the poll question that they are both bad. Like I said, I was curious which people thought were worse.

And I thought so too, but it occurred to me that some things I have taken as a given are not things other people take as given or even agree with.

I wanted to get a sense of if it was indeed a given in the public consensus. Or if people's opinions on the relative badness of such things have shifted.

I guess this is kinda what I'm seeing. Most people agree that assault in response to a slur is less moral than a slur in response to an assault. And yet plenty feel very comfortably half-endorsing violence towards those who would slur others.

So is it like a morality thing of

Worst = Unprovoked violence
Second worst = Unprovoked slurs
Third worst = Provoked violence

?

I don't know what you mean by "that" in this context.

Most people agree slurring others is immoral.
Most people agree that physically assaulting others is immoral.

So I asked if it was worse to slur somebody in response to a phsycial assault, or physically assault somebody in response to a slur.

Even though most of us recognize physical violence to be worse than slurs (as bad as slurs are), I don't think many here would even hypothetically defend a victim of assault using a slur, but I do see people here somewhat defending victims of slurs using assault.

Assault is assault no matter how you look at it. You cannot justify violence unless you were simply defending yourself from being attacked.
That's how I see it anyways.

I know berating someone is a shitty thing to do... But you can always walk away from that situation and prevent yourself from lowering yourself to their level as it is never worth it.

Try to rub some braincells together and reason out why people think using a slur as a response to anything is a no-no.

I'll help you a bit. Would these same people be as critical if our hypothetical victim just called their attacker an "asshole" or "bastard"?
