60 percent of college students are women. 40 percent are men. At least for 2020-2021 class.

I bet it will get worse.

Yeah. Once you account for the age of the people in it, there's still plenty more men who are going to college out of high school than women. A good chunk of those women are housewives and the like who haven't worked in a decade or more because they had kids to raise.

That's not true though. Did you read the article? Much fewer men are going to college out of high school than women.

There's a research paper that covers this for all developed Western countries, it isn't unique to the US.

Ah, reading competencies, hm?

Sounds like I should get back into volunteering "Read to a Child" stuff.

*sigh* I like consulting and visiting different clients every day, but man does it make it difficult to do a regular volunteering thing like when I was doing a regular FT job. :-/

Yeah, not to dump on the original article too much (it's not bad, worth the read if you guys know how to get by paywalls), but it applies a lot of US centric potential explanations to something that clearly isn't unique to the US. That research paper is a lot better look at what the potential causes might be.

Actually the issue is that college used to be gatekept so only those with money or exceptional ability could pursue it, and as such it was a near guaranteed ticket into the upper echelons of society.

As it became more accessible, the elite began creating new ways to keep out people from the working class. "Yes you have a degree, but you can't get experience unless either
A) you do an unpaid internship (something only people with money can afford because they have bills and rent to pay)
B) you have friends and family who can give you a job to get that experience in (meaning you'd need to have contacts in fancy corporate institutions to do so)

As things stand, college for a degree is a formality, what matters is forming connections they'll use later in life like when they're rising the corporate ladder and need to call on business associates for deals or what have you. Or else, for political funding when they're running for office.

So yeah, the degree itself no longer means as much... Oh, and the elites that run the universities and student loan companies intentionally raise the price to still keep out as name lower and middle class people as possible, or at least profit heavily from them.

STEM majors might still be dominated by men. When I was in college last year with the Zoom classes I noticed in general ed classes only had a handful of guys to 20 women. When I was taking my electrical engineering class the women disappeared and the classes only had 7 people.

Pre-covid my major classes used to have 20-30 people. Might have just been a general trend of people saying im not paying for Zoom classes and skipped the semester though as well.

In most of Europe, nepotism runs rampant. But yeah, it's no doubt different in Asian countries. Some because with China and the like you'll have people who simply can't pursue further education because they have to still support their family/ farm/ couldn't possibly have enough money to move from the country to a city. Or Japan where you can still survive just fine without a degree working regular jobs at corner stores and the like.

Doubt that.

This probably just means that less men are going for stupid degrees that wont pay for the cost of going to college. STEM still pays so those smart enough are still going to pursue that.

It may just be a weeding out of people that just shouldnt go to college.

Undergrad degree participation does not predict profession employment. Women have dominated undergrad enrollment of psychology for decades but psych professors tend to be 50/50. Biology tends to be equitable at the undergrad level but biology professors tend to be majority male.

I mean, man have already kind of been doing that, but I'm sure many whom had potential in the field otherwise are also walking away.

Which could spell a shortage of doctors, scientist, engineer's, and mathematicians in the coming decades.

Given that I'm finishing up a mech engineering/physics double major, and my classes are split nearly 50/50 men and women, it seems like women will have no problem stepping up to fill vacancies in STEM

This is far too optimistic. The reality is that women will continue to be pushed out of professional positions, at a higher proportion the higher the position is.
