Where you knew there is a 99% chance you will die on Normandy beach.

How did the soldiers even manage to sleep the night before?

Now that's probably a bit of an exaggeration. Casualties in the first wave on Omaha Beach might have around 50%, and not all of those were killed.

Or the Battle of the Marne. You are a young teenager full of thoughts of glory and heroism going off to war. This is the first major battle and no one yet realizes how bad industrialized warfare is going to be. You get sucked into the meat grinder of heavy artillery and machine guns.

150,000 dead in less than a week.

Lol only three. My sister is 18 years older than me, and that was from my mom's first marriage. My dad had me and two other sons (they are 8 and 10 years older). Was awkward when I was like 5 and people would say "it must be hard for your mom to take care of four kids", thought they were making fun of my dad since I didn't even realize I had a sister -.-

Well, no, the Battle of the Frontiers had already been fought by the time of the Marne. 22 August in particular was probably the bloodiest single day of the entire war for France. 27,000 killed over several battle sites along the French front.

Actually my dad was near the same age as my grandmother. Also my grandmother and grandfather on my mom's side were also WW2 vets.

Disgraceful. Makes you question what theyre doing in the first place.

The rest of the movie aside that Omaha beach scene was truly inspired.

The way youre protected from the magnitude of whats happening until the fromt doors on the landing craft go down, to how the sound cuts in and out underwater after they go over the side and crawl ashore, to the piece de resistance when you see the soldier picking himself up after the soldier were seeing through gets flattened by an explosion.

Omaha and one other had higher casualties. The other landing zones weren't too bad. The allies sent false messages to be picked up by the Germans to throw them off.

@Hexenherz

British Merchant Navy. What exactly his job title was is difficult to pin down because he did almost everything aboard the ships, from shoveling coal to firing the guns. Wish he was alive to ask him, although he'd be 100 if he was alive so maybe not a straight answer from that.
