In the end he was technically a good guy but he pretending to be bad was kinda worse than the actual bad guys.
1. Tsukoyomi Later on Sasuke puts people he has no connection to in tsukoyomi and it isn't even remotely as horrifying. It is like Itachi really wanted to be an asshole to Kakashi. Making him get stabbed for several days... wtf. And they were sorta friends. Then he made Sasuke relieve the Uchiha massacre in a tsukoyomi. 2. The whole steal you eyes thing when he fought sasuke. It was really creepy and unnecessary since he never intended to do it. 3. Kill your friend. What if sasuke actually did this? It wasn't necessary since Itachi was just gonna give sasuke his eyes anyways. I know his goal was to have Sasuke kill him, but alot of this had nothing to do with that. Maybe torture is how Itachi expressed fondness to others? ... Copied to Clipboard!

He really wanted Sasuke to hate him so he won't hate Leaf (which are the ones who ordered him to kill his clan), so he won't stage a coup himself if someday he figures it out cuz Leaf gonna demolish him (not to mention not having a home or village). Guess he really wanted it to be convincing he's a bad guy? Or the author didn't think it through

a lot of anime plotlines hinge on extremely poor communication between characters, to the extent of breaking suspension of disbelief if one is accustomed to the better writing common in other mediums
