Traverse City / Mackinac Island Detroit / Flint Which comes to mind first when you think of Michigan? - Results (31 votes) Traverse City / Mackinac Island 12.9% (4 votes) 4 Detroit / Flint 87.1% (27 votes) 27 My girlfriend and I were having this debate. I told her I was surprised that U of M is so prestigious because I can't imagine people from out of state moving here. I told her before moving to Michigan I literally only thought of Detroit and Flint, and that whenever I think of how others see my home state, Ohio, they think of Cleveland and Columbus. I said people from other states seem to have negative opinions of both, and associate both with impoverished, blue collar, rust belt cities. (To be clear, I like stuff about both states, and I don't see these things as a negative although I think most people do) She said Michigan has a positive image and people think about Traverse City and Mackinac (which I hadn't even heard about before moving here), and the upper peninsula. K181 09/02/21 2:08:58 PM #6:	Other, Western Michigan. Whitehall, Muskegon, Grand Haven, Holland, etc. Fantastic area. Will eventually buy a summer cottage in that area and in the process of looking into buying a small boat to be able to go to and from the area and Chicago. That being said, Michigan is basically the quintessential rust belt state in the national psyche. I live in Bay city. It's getting kind of rough here. They're remodeling a lot, but the shootings and overdoses are getting pretty wild. Also, a lot of people accidentally burning down their houses >_>. It's like we're trying to become upscale with not very upscale people. It really matters what part you're in. You probably know more about it than I do lol. I also don't drink much or care for going to bars, so our big area of bars (Midland street) misses me too.
