Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin each have a Democratic and a Republican senator. Maine has a GOP and an independent. Vermont has a Dem. and an independent. Is this surprising?

It makes perfect sense given the climate. It used to be a lot more would have two senators. With the rise of fox news the voting became more and more partisan in an effort to win elections; there are very few people walking a middle ground anymore who have a future in politics it seems.

Maine and Vermont are kinda weird

Maine has an independent senator, a GOP senator and a Democratic governor, while Vermont has an independent senator, a Democratic senator and a GOP governor.

I wonder if this variety makes those states more politically balanced than others....

I don't know.

Maybe they (the person) runs with whatever party is available?

Like Trump running as a Democrat if the Republican ticket was taken.

This was in consideration until it was pointed out that the superdelegates could refuse the nom; thusly it was sealed he'd run republican which is open.

Sounds about right because both senators get elected by the same voting population just on different years. Now if each senator represented half of the state for example then I would be more surprised.
