I go through ebay and other sites to look for beatemups I've never played, and I saw this one (a part of the Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun/Renegade series). If I've never seen it, I'll take the title and put it in youtube for footage, this one didn't even have a wikipedia page.

I was immediately struck, because I saw several characters on screen who were NOT fighting each other. Which for a beatemup is very strange. And then they started talking, and I realized it was an RPG. I watched further, and its an open map, with a day/night cycle, shops and other stuff, levelling up. You can attack civilians, and civilians will also jump into your gang fights for either you or the enemy. It's an actual RPG, running on beatemup mechanics. I can only think of 1 or 2 other examples of this from that period:

woah, this is cool. never heard of this game or that series before. it seems like an upgraded River City Ransom.

is that YT video a fan translation of a ROM or was it actually ported / translated to English?

I wonder if the developers for MK Deception Adventure mode or MK Shaolin Monks ever played this.

Yeah, this game is pretty awesome.

There's also something of a sequel to it, and apparently it's finally getting localized as River City Girls Zero, later this year.

Shin Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio Tachi no Banka is good too, if you haven't played that one.

I was definitely intrigued by this one too. It seems just a little more straightforward, I can't tell if it has the same level of RPG mechanics as the game in this topic. But I want both, since they're obviously among the deeper beatemups on SFC.

I was researching the Double Dragon series recently, when I learned it spawned off Kunio-kun. So then I became very intirgued by that and started checking out different games in the series.

I'm collecting complete in box games for original Famicom and Super Famicom, and I'm trying to get all the best beatemups for both consoles (and someday move into the Genesis beatemups as well).

I'm very intrigued by the transition period from the older 2d beatemups, which were basically action platformers, you only moved left and right, changing to the beatemups like Double Dragon/Streets of Rage/Final Fight where its the psuedo-3d perspective that I think is amazing and underutilized. (they were hugely popular, but I mean underutilized in that, there werent more games like the one in this topic, that went deeper in terms of game content and not just fighting levels)

There should absolutely be more games like this.

That's Kunio-Kun? From the thumbnail, I was thinking it was a Yu Yu Hakusho game.

I saw someone else comment that this has a more anime feel than the rest of the series
