Did you know you're not supposed to be near aluminum during thunderstorms?

19 y/o Lifeguard, Keith Pinto was killed after he was struck by LIGHTNING while sitting on an elevated ALUMINUM TOWER while on the beach!!

7 other people were injured including 3 lifeguards when lightning struck a Jersey Shore Beach in New Jersey

It happened at 4:35pm at the 21st Avenue Beach when thes tudent at Ocean County College was seated in the elevated aluminum chair

Vince Ruffalo told NBC he was close tot eh aluminum life guard stand when he felt a jolt and then THROWN off his feet and onto the and below

He said "Picture an explosion and an explosion happens all of a sudden, without giving you any warning, next thing you know you're on the ground and then you have an odor like burning hair. So it was very, very dramatic for us"

A sudden storm rolled in that day as other jersey beach goers were evacuated.

Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said Pinto was struck because he was sitting on an elevated chair that attracts lighting and it traveled through him through the chair on the ground and that is why anybody else nearby got zapped as well which is a scary situation

Friends and family paid tribute to the lifeguard who worked there over the summer to help pay for college as the beach will remain closed

Did you know you're not supposed to sit on aluminum in a thunder storm?

There's a perfect pun to make here, but it's inappropriate; moreso than some of Duckbear's topics or questions. So I'll resist sharing since this is so unfortunate.

I was almost struck by lightning once, except I was indoors. I think it hit right outside the window.

what was weird about it was that we felt it coming. all of a sudden the room just "felt" electrically charged, and that feeling just grew stronger for few seconds while we looked around wondering what was happening and then suddenly there was a blinding white BANG with a popping/shattering sound outside which I think was a lamppost that was what got hit, and the lightbulb exploded. (though I'm not really sure.)

all of our UPSs were beeping, all of our (CRT) monitors were purple and a few network cards and power supplies were dead as well as some ports on the main network switch.

And the Darwin award of 2021 goes to...

Well, I guess even that wouldn't qualify considering how many anti-vaxxers are getting their just desserts.

Sometimes lightning strikes before the storm is obvious (like, before it rains at all). Obviously that chair is deadly in a thunderstorm, but it sounds like the poor kid didn't even realize a storm had started. :(

I have no idea what "aluminum" is, so I have no clue about its ability to attract lightning or not.

It may shock you to know that that was a bad joke. And before you revolt against me on this by saying you're not laughing, keep in mind that I did call it a bad joke.

I live at the coast and we had this in June. No rain no storm and all of a sudden a big bang the whole city could hear. It is called positive (charged) lightning and it strikes next to the storm. At the coast you sometimes have different kinds of weather in the sky. It can be different on sea, on the beach/dunes and inland.

Pretty sure I came across it as a fantasy element/metal in a D&D sourcebook. So why would I think they are the same thing?

Damn. Why would they build a big metal structure someone is supposed to sit on without putting lightning rods nearby? How sad.

...

Aluminum is the original version and is just as valid, just like the difference between color and colour. Aluminium was the version that people who didn't think Aluminum was in keeping with element naming conventions enough insisted on changing the word to. In other words... the alternate spelling aluminium came from a bunch of stuck-up posers who didn't even care that their alteration meant ignoring the etymology of the word in favor of what they thought "conformed better":

"It was back in 1807 when (Humphry Davy) identified the 13th element on the periodic table which he first named aluminum as a nod to alumina which refers to the oxidation of aluminum"

"It was back in 1807 when (Humphry Davy) identified the 13th element on the periodic table which he first named aluminum as a nod to alumina which refers to the oxidation of aluminum"
reading about this, Humphry Davy said he should name it alumium. no one liked that name, since the prefix "alum" is english, with the latin word being alumen and its prefix form being alumin-. and then no one agreed on the suffix, choosing either -um or -ium and some people switching between them at various times.

"Had I been so fortunate as to have obtained more certain evidences on this subject, and to have procured the metallic substances I was in search of, I should have proposed for them the names of silicium, alumium, zirconium, and glucium."

  1. Because D&D and similar universes don't make a habit of naming their metals things like "irion" or "coppyr." If you encounter a metal in a fantasy universe that differs from a real-world metal by one letter, it stands to reason that it's just an alternate spelling of a real-world metal that's present in-universe, not actually a fantasy metal
  2. Because that spelling and pronunciation are used in most not-British English-speaking regions, many of whom are represented very thoroughly in the English-speaking parts of the Internet, meaning you've had ample opportunity to see that spelling used in a non-fantasy context and there's really no reason to assume it's exclusive to fantasy
