I was on a moderately sized tourist boat travelling through an unstable region. We were travelling through a packed waterway, and the boat skirted across the concrete side of the waterway three times and burnt out the engine. We were boarded by an armed group who were acting on behalf of the ruling party of the area, and we were detained as a group.

The freakiest part of the dream was when we were visited by a spin doctor or someone who wanted to take pictures of us smiling to send to our home nations as proof that we weren't being mistreated, and he told us that if we weren't smiling when the pictures were taken, it would be taken as a sign of sabotage and insubordination, and we could be taken from the group and subjected to either much worse punishment or instant death via a bullet to the head. He told us that any time they needed us, we had to be smiling, and basically brainwashed us through the threat of severe punishment to grin through their inhumane treatment of us.

There was a point where I made a friend in the group who tried to escape the camp. We had a river nearby, but the only escape was off a sheer drop into a valley that even the river had a hard time dipping off of. I don't know if he survived or not in the dream.

It was a dream, and eventually there was dream logic. But it was an extremely upsetting dream, even when I was able to go home later on in a blur. People did die.

The part that sticks out is being forced to smile for propaganda, so the people detaining us under the threat of violence could say that they weren't mistreating us. Basically having to play mind games to have the most genuine smile on our faces whenever they were there under threat of getting a bullet in the head. Like what the fuck.
