I understand it is our civic duty as citizens to do it, but its such a weird concept to summon you to take part in this process. A process in which you have to take off work, and go and serve. If you do not show up, you get arrested and jailed and fined. Just a weird concept all around. Btw I have jury duty tomorrow and this is me airing my grievances.

You have a responsibility to participate. Even if its only two hours. Even if you have to show up in court with your mother and your sister.

By participating in jury service you are contributing to the common good. It is the ideal of democracy. And that is so hard to grasp for many Americans. When people are not called for jury duty they get mad. And when they do get called, some make a game out of not showing up. And if theres an election coming up, then why not? And if we dont, maybe we will face a judge that thinks we are in cahoots with the criminal element or maybe a politician who knows that people want their votes to be as cheap as possible.

Well, you need not fear. I am committed to jury service.

As a juror I've seen cases from the defense and prosecution side and I would say that most people do their duty in a reasonably conscientious manner. What I mean is that they're reasonable people.

The last time I was summoned for jury duty I was dangerously close to getting put on a murder trial. Seriously, fuck that shit. I'm more than willing to sit through some long boring-ass contract dispute or whatever for the less than minimum wage they pay jurors but I sure as shit don't feel like spending the rest of my life with the irrational fear of a homicidal maniac breaking out of jail and hunting me down for being partly responsible for putting him in there.

I was chosen the first time to be on the jury. We immediately went to court for the trial and didn't get home until after 8pm. A good portion of the 12 hours was spent in this tiny hot room looking at a surveillance tape over and over trying to decide if it was the defendant. It wasn't fun.

From what I heard one thing you can say to get you off jury duty so fast is say you "100% support law enforcement and will inclined to vote guilty"

You'll be bounced almost immediately by the defense.

That's what a guy did the last time. He stood up for every question like that until the judge started laughing.

He still had to sit there for 4 hours until it was over.

I was told that when you go they ask you questions. The trick was to be opinionated and say you have family that have been victims of the same crime you are there for. The lawyers wont pick you because they want to win.

They won't hold you in contempt. They know if you act like a petty clown that doesn't want to be there, they'll disqualify in place of someone more adequate.

I've heard if you mention jury nullification to the judge and lawyers, you won't selected either.

I had jury duty like 2 months ago. Pain in the ass. Though I was able to get out of it after like an hour. It was a case about gun violence. I said my friend was killed by gun violence(which was true) and there was no way I could give the defendant a fair chance(which was kinda true but mostly an exaggeration) so they let me go.

That's probably because you got lucky and your groups never actually got called in. It sounds easy to just ignore it but they can very easily fine you like $1000 or something. And you'd still have to go into court and deal with that. Not worth the risk imo.

The real trick is to play the God card. Tell them you believe only God has the right to cast judgement on people. They really can't do shit if you say that. I'd have done it but I'm a poor liar.

I love it, tbh

I know it's different in each State, but here in Oregon you only have to show up for one day. If you're selected for a trial, then you're there for the trial. A lot of people don't get picked, though. There is like 20 people and each side selects people or something like that. Most cases only last a day. If it lasts longer than that, then of course you're there longer than a day

If you don't get selected, like most people from that 20ish, then you just have to go and wait to see if you get selected again. If you are, just repeat what I just said. If you're not, or never in the first place, then you just go home.

I have done it 9 times now, and have been actually selected to be on the jury 5 times, and I always enjoy it. I wish I had the motivation to just go and watch people be tried
