I've only heard that the game is dogshit, but recently I've been seeing it called a "cult classic." I'm a huge Twin Peaks stan, so I'm fairly intrigued by the Switch port. But what am I in for?

Great experience, terrible game. Characters, writing, story are all top notch. Graphics, gameplay and performance are all awful.

The Switch version is fine. It was rough at launch, but had a few patches to iron it out, although there's still a few oddities, like the driving is weirdly over-sensitive. But it's got the gameplay tweaks the director's cut version had, but is missing the extra cutscenes, which aren't canon anymore due to the sequel (which you should ignore, because it's an awful, unfinished mess) and there was some DLC for the director's cut (you can buy a house!), which is mostly pointless, so you're not missing much.

It's good in the way something like Manos or Zaat is good. Awful sub-B-movie level trash that has some sort of charm to it

It is both incredible and absolute trash. Legitimately one of my favorite stories in video games, but god is it a nightmare to actually play.

You'll appreciate the Twin Peaks influence throughout. Speaking of which - the PS1 game Mizzurna Falls finally got an English translation, that one looks even more Twin Peaksy (I haven't tried it yet)

Great characters, great story. SOME people will tell you the gameplay is "bad", that's a bit of hyperbole. There is fun to be had.

Gameplay was really only particularly bad I'm the original version where everything was an unnecessary bullet sponge. Now that they're less tanky than even the original version's easy mode it's bland but fine.

Also the strict OTS camera in free roam was awkward, so that was another good change.

I hated Deadly Premonition even with the great Twin Peaks influences. I haven't played the Director's Cut or Switch version, but in the original, everything is beyond clunky, especially the driving, oh my god the driving. Even besides the controls, I thought most of the enemy encounters were bland and uninspired, which is where the game's budget really shines through the most I think. It is a great story, but is it worth suffering through the game? I honestly don't think so personally.

It's both great and terrible. It probably would have been remembered as a classic if it was better. A real diamond in the rough.
