Obviously. You can work hard doing pointless and unproductive shit. You're probably not going to find much success without some personal intiative towards that goal

I guess thats true in the sense that hard work, even when applied toward something worthwhile, guarantees a better life. But it significantly increases your chances of it happening.

I've been resistant to hard work, at least when it comes to typical employment, because I grew up seeing people kill themselves only to scrape by. I live a meager life with realistic aspirations because I don't ever want to be in a position where I have to break my back for someone else to stay fed and sheltered. Most of my time and effort goes into shit I want to do. I honestly don't think I'd last very long any other way.

Exacly. The notion that good things come to people that wait is a naive child's view of how the world works.

Classic delusions itt

"Hmm i am less successful than someone else, it cant possibly be due to my own deficiencies... no, something must be wrong with them"

Yea hard work alone isnt enough in a lot of cases
Some luck, some personality, and good decision making (e.g. maybe working hard at underwater basket weaving isnt the best path) all factor in

I think work ethic is still important for a lot of people to have success. However just a work ethic won't guarantee success, below it have a hard time making it to the $75-80k threshold they say it takes to not worry about money.

And IQ score obviously isn't perfect but this is the easiest number to quantify.

And there are exceptions. Athletes, entertainers, singers, etc. Now generally they are really hard working, but there are exceptions that are just freak talents.

I mean... you can be totally right and still be wrong

For people with defenciencies, hard work goes less far because... the hard work is still going to be lower quality than someone who knows what they are doing.

The formula for success involves hard work + a good plan + slight bit of luck.

So no, hard work by itself does not lead to a better life.

Tbh the plan is the hardest part of the equation. Most people dont know what to do or just come up with shitty plans. And part of having a good plan is that you're constantly reevaluating and adjusting your plan. The "head down" "brute force" hard work is only employed in short stretches until you reevaluate to make sure you're on the right track.

I should become a life coach. I've coached several little cousins to go on to become highly successful, and they all come back years later and say my lessons is what they kept thinking of and everything I said always was true.

I work hard because I enjoy pushing myself to hit goals at work like hitting quotas and getting certain tasks done on time. Not for any promotions or getting further up the company I've never been intrested in management.

Outside of work i have my other goals in life I'd like to accomplish but I need as much money saved to even attempt them so I'm content in working towards that. Everyone had goals they're ultimately trying to achieve but it's naive to believe simply "working hard" is enough.

As other people have indicated, you have to work hard at the right things in order to succeed. The right thing happens to be completely arbitrary, and sometimes unhealthy or dangerous or criminal, and you have to succeed at this completely arbitrary and idiotic game in order to just survive, because for some reason we built our civilization like some kind of fucking bureaucratic jungle, but you might get lucky.

America is certainly not only place feeling it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tang_ping

I have basically forfeited to this same mentality. With my experience working, hard work has never paid off. Whenever I have worked hard I am met with even more. So many jobs make working efficient impossible because they want you on their time. You finish early then they will give you more BS tasks. You do a perfect job then they expand your responsibilities without extra benefits or more pay. So after awhile it seems futile to push oneself over the threshold of what you will be rewarded for.

Smart work is where it's at.

If it were just me or a few people itt you might have a point. Fact of the matter is the ability of people to improve their lot in life has diminished significantly over the past several decades. There are multiple statistics showing that this is a national trend that isn't based on a few people's deficiencies or whatever

With how fast the world can change + how much time and resources a good plan can take, everythings more of a gamble than you think.

Especially when basic safety nets like healthcare and housing arent there to catch you when the wind changes directions mid-plan.

Because it has worked for me. At the work place I'm not there to middle and get as little money as possible and climb up slowly, I want to get as much reward as I can quickly so I can hold more cards in the tail end of my life.

Mind, I also am pretty adaptable and every rung I've stepped I've at least proven my worth to hang in there, but simply pointing out that the people above me are doing worse than I would and going behind their back to prove it works for me, or making them just look worse in general.

My mindset is probably a bit too harsh for a lot of people to get, but I am greedy when it comes to money. I grew up eat-ramen-every-day/do we get to have heat today poor, and have no intention of ever returning to that, so I'm a little more cutthroat on that front. I'm a very different person in life and work though.

As someone who worked his as off in customer service for years. I can tell you it doesn't pay off. What pays off is smart choices. Hard work already follows with that. But if you don't make those smart choices in between. Your not doing yourself any favors.
