I like traveling if I don't have to worry about my responsibilities, and for the last few years that just hasn't been the case. While I'm gone I always feel worried about my folks and my fuzzies to the point that I just don't have as great a time as I would otherwise, and I just want the trip to be over

It means I have to figure out how the local cultural and societal customs work, and that people will probably try to scam me somehow, especially if I don't / barely speak the local language.
Also, actually getting to a far away place takes a lot of time and means having to be at certain places at certain times and going through various checkpoints and the whole experience is often just stressful and uncomfortable.

Before anyone asks "well why don't you go out camping", I don't like camping.

I love travelling, but I hate travelling.

Like, I love seeing new places and meeting new people and seeing the world, but I hate the process of getting there. The booking, the admin, the checks, making sure I have everything before I leave, arranging for the pets to be looked after.

  1. I can see it on the internet from my own home
  2. It's expensive
  3. I'm just going to end up in a Walmart judging it in comparison to my local one because I needed something anyway.
  4. I refuse to use air travel
  5. Amtrak is damned expensive and I'm not in touching a fucking bus.

I enjoy travelling, but a lot of people assuming travelling is one of the following things:

-Warm destination resort
-A "Find myself" backpack trip in a poor country and/or Europe

I can drive 45 minutes to a half decent campsite that is good for friends who anen't into camping. I can drive 2 hours to the bush and rough it. That is travelling, in my opinion.

If you plan it well enough they can be affordable and enjoyable for most but I'm not very good at planning plus my low value citys airport garentees I'll be forced to have at least one stop.

And could be forced to walk upwards of half a hour(no joke) to my next plan depending on how big the airport is.

Neither does international travel. I think this is a big part of why a lot of people don't travel: Their perception of it and its cost are incredibly overinflated. This isn't to say that it's accessible to everyone, but it's definitely far more accessible to more people than most people believe

Getting up and into the outside elements is already a poor decision. Do you know how many places the world has? You're not going to see them all. Most people tend to go the same typical locations as if we haven't already seen it in a book or something. At least go somewhere actually exotic. There's places that humans haven't seen or know much about as well, why don't you try exploring? Who knows, maybe your name will go down in history when you discover the flying face eating spiders. Why do people like travelling?

The OP was odd so I thought I should respond oddly. Some people just don't want to travel. It's the same as with many other activities regardless of effort or expenses. You could offer me an all expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world, if I have no interest, then I'm probably not going. There's nothing difficult to understand here.

Stick to a budget and traveling is easy. Its more affordable to travel abroad even Europe. In Europe I tend to cook my own meals to save money. I prefer traveling in Southeast Asia. Dont plan, just arrive to the city center, ask the hotel receptionist for a paper map or advice on what to see and do and cheap places to eat out. Youre set.

my budget is $30 a day to travel. For example in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia this was my budget:

$7-10 a night on accommodation with breakfast included.

$5-10 on food

$5-10 public transportation, I walk if I can help it to save money. I dont pay to go see tourist attractions unless I got no choice. I see and do whatever is free. I prefer going to local markets, shopping areas though I dont buy anything, and plenty of walking and sightseeing.

Yeah, try that going to a first world country, or even a post-communist state, instead of a third world country.

youre right, Southeast Asia is more affordable and the dollar goes a long way. But its certainly possible to travel cheaply on the same budget of $30 a day in developed countries, but its really cutting it close. But its doable base on my experience

sweden, Norway, Australia, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Japan just as an example, budget at least $45 to $60 if youre traveling cheap.

accommodation $15-25 a night with breakfast included

food: $5-10, I highly suggest cooking your own food in more expensive countries, you can easily get away with $5 a day by grocery shopping and making your own meals.

transportation will vary but it costs $1-2 per ride on the metro. Again I try to avoid paying for tourist attractions unless its something I want to see.

the trick is to travel slow. When you try to cram everything, see and do everything, move to different cities every day, the cost will go up. I tend to stay in 1 city at least 3-4 days before moving on, sometimes longer if I like it

All you people saying money & responsibilities are just dodging. I have to say, even ignoring that though, what's there to like?
You enjoy sleeping in a hotel more than at home?
Cooking in a hotel or eating nothing but restaurant food?

And assuming you're not at... Disneyland or whatever, what do you actually DOOO? Window shop? Cause if you get stuff you gotta pack it to take home. Just order it online or shop locally.

I just don't even know, like what... sight seeing? Im not impressed by seeing stuff like old buildings. I mean sure, it might be nice to see the Grand Canyon... for five minutes, not worth a whole trip. Especially not with all those people around, tourists in particular. Or the salespeople trying to peddle their trash.

"Well if you don't like people, then go hiking, hurr durr"
No. I don't like exercise, or nature and the outdoors. I hate camping, not a damn thing to do without electricity... Campfires are okay I guess but I don't like smores. Im not just antisocial though, I would rather hang out with friends locally, like at a mall or something.

The real world just doesnt interest me. Too much effort with nothing gained. Rather stay home and play video games, watch anime, surf the web.

Then what is it? Im literally asking. I probably won't change my mind, but I'm curious why other people might enjoy it because I don't see any benefits. People have different hobbies though so maybe I'm overlooking something... that isn't better locally. Like I understand the hidden gems are better than the big tourist sites but what are you going to find to make it worth it? Like shopping could be fun at some mom & pop retro game store where they don't know Chrono Trigger is worth more than five bucks but... what are the odds.

Maybe the cheese-steaks are better in Philly, I'll give you cuisine but... thats not worth a whole trip. You're there to see or do something, what is it?

Is it camping or hiking or whatever? I said I don't like it but I guess if you do then... whatever I suppose. Its too bad beaches are always crowded. Wouldn't mind some snow either but not sure how long I could enjoy it.

History is one. I love going places with a lot of history (Scotland, Japan)
Natural beauty that I can't see and experience at home (New Zealand)
Different foods and cultures. It's a lot different experiencing the culture vs simply reading about it (not always in a good way, but even so well worth experiencing)
