Or really any time period before the advent of smartphones but since I'm randomly watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes -

So many problems could have easily been resolved if someone could have just sent someone a goddamn text.

Nowadays it's all about finding excuses to put the characters in situations where they can't use their phones, and it's not often done competently.

In a way though they still find a way in the modern day to make these things work with phones being dead or on silent or stuff. But I hate that they always have to demonstrate that fact on screen so people aren't thinking "why didn't they just text though?"

I was thinking this while watching Scream. When Billy drops his cell phone, it instantly makes Sidney suspect him of being the killer and runs away from him. That scene would make no sense nowadays.
