Current Events > Nirvana lowkey sucked. Are they respected only because of Kurt Cobain?

If Kurt Cobain hadn't tragically taken his life, I can't imagine Nirvana not fading away like nearly every other similar band from that era. The vocals sucked, the songwriting was corny, the actual instrumentals were boring.

They're like the precursor to 00s butt rock where vocalists just make that "hyeeayugh" noise.

it's true. punk is literally the worst genre of music of all time. And it's exactly why he said. Boring instrumentation, poor vocal range, edgy songwriting, poor musicianship. The only thing it has going for it is lead guitar.

Would've happened either way, just look at today's music charts, 99% suckage.

Not your cup of tea I guess.

Curious question, not to start anything, honest query, are you a metal guy?

In my opinion, they're held it such high regard mainly because Kurt died before they had a chance to start making bad music.

Yeah but just because their music wouldn't "chart" doesn't mean they would've faded away.

Maybe from the mainstream, but not from making music or performing/touring.

Look at Pearl Jam. Opinion of their music aside, they've been relevant enough to do full stadium tours basically every other year. Selling out 40-50,000 seat ballparks all across America despite not being mainstream relevant in 20 years+.

Shoot, pre-pandemic, Billy Joel was literally selling out Madison Square Garden ONCE A MONTH for 6 straight years (2014-2020), despite not putting a new album out since 1993.

Being mainstream and staying relevant are two totally different things.

Nah they had some legit hits before he died, and one of the most memorable MTV Unplugged performances ever. Obviously what happened to Kurt cemented them into the pop culture lexicon in a way their music never would have, but I think they would still be respected

Er is that really true?

Considering the Foo Fighters are pretty well known, I think both Cobain and Grohl would've gotten them cemented.

They had:

  • a good first album
  • 2 legendary albums that are the best of the best of 90s rock & alternative, and were highly influential
  • A live album thats among the top live albums ever (top 100 for sure)
  • a great B-sides album

Thats why theyre a historically great band. If Cobain didnt die and they released ten more albums, Im sure some of them would have been not great, but maybe they would have released a few more classics as well.

Dying at the height of fame more or less catapults a person from famous to infamous, it puts them in a whole other conversation than if they just had popular music, which Nirvana also did

80% Nirvana's own success and influence
20% Kurt Cobain's death

That adds up to 100% of Nirvana's mojo

Every band with a dead frontman always prompts weird edgelords like TC. A week ago some kid claimed Linkin Park wasn't even popular anymore when anyone with functioning eyeballs and ears knew that wasn't the case.

Just say you don't like the music instead of all this extra dumb shit. You weren't even alive when Nirvana was around anyway.

Right. I guess I can get that they're more popular than just good music. But they'd still be pretty known in pop culture

Low tier bait.

they could link anything loved, popular, etc., and youd still call it garbage.

I have faith that one day the tryhards of CE will come to realize <popular thing> isnt objectively bad just because you all think it is.

I hate hate HATE Nirvana, but youre talking about things that are so far beyond your understanding if you want to try to say they weren't massive when Kurt died. Nirvana was and still is EVERYWHERE.

That music genre is not the hot new thing anymore, yet you can still go to a college campus and see Nirvana shirts everywhere.

I don't like Nirvana, but I cant say Id prefer the view with my head stuck up my ass.

I dislike Nirvana songs as well, but Nirvana was still pretty mainstream even before Kurt Cobain died. Obviously it did leave a more everlasting impact on their legacy, but they were still pretty relevant even before then.
