Are video game ratings more than guidelines?

My brother bought my 12 year old nephew GTA V for his birthday and although I understand a age rating is just a guideline I can't help but think he's not old enough to play a 18 rated game. His dad is into gaming so knows GTA as does my sister and their fine with it so that's their call. It's still not something I'd do.

Every kid is different but I think most 12 year olds would understand that its just a game to goof off in

Even if they start doing the perverted stuff like going to strip clubs in the game, kids are gonna go through puberty no matter what and stuff like that is extremely tame compared to all the shit on the internet

My sisters kid. However yes I have a brother too. All around the same age. Half siblings I know I have are two half brothers but that's where the rabbit hole ends for now until I dig deeper. BlogFAQs.

I mean alot of video game ratings are absolutely dumb as hell(especially ESRB) so yeah, I mean I was playing M rated stuff from age 4 and already knew it was the worst thing to kill people irl so it should be really no big deal. 12 year olds are mighty dumb but they should absolutely know what the difference is between reality and fiction and if they don't they have bigger problems.

Yeah they are more like guidelines than actual ratings.

Jokes aside, parents should look at the ratings before buying games to their kids.

I mean, the ratings existence in the first place was because parents wanted to easily know what game is suitable for their children.

I mean age ratings have been a thing long before the internet became mainstream but even now plenty of folk know what these games are but just ignore the rating as it's trivial.

I always thought that denying kids games based on the ratings is stupid. No mater what you say, the kid is going to try it anyways. If you don't get it for them, they will play it at a friends house or pirate it online.

It is much better if you are the one giving it to them, and explain that it is a game and they shouldn't be doing most (if not all) of the stuff going on IRL.
