This is a hilarious way to gently spin what happened.

Just sort of leaving out some contextual details, like it was her and several thousand others in a frenzied mob, they had already killed a police officer and were carrying weapons and chanting "hang Mike Pence".

They erected a gallows, they were gunning for particular individuals. Some of them were carrying tools for kidnapping.

But sure, it was just a window...

It's very easy to be calm and rational when you don't have hundreds of raging people screaming to kill you as they break windows and doors (trespassing) to get at you. In nearly every state, if someone breaks into your property and threatens your life, firing on them would be considered self-defense. And I say this as someone who doesn't and will never own a gun.

That being said, of course he should be open to criticism and shouldn't necessarily be praised for shooting someone. It's possible he didn't need to fire--it's also quite possible if he didn't he and many other would've been killed.

He probably actually saved the lives of several of the insurrectionists too. If they had gotten through him and run into Pence's security detail like they were hoping to, I don't think there's much doubt that it would have gotten bloody.

In reality, she was breaking into the building while Congress was sitting, as a part of a large angry group who were trying to prevent the certification of the 2020 election. A majority of senators - if not every senator - was in attendance, as well as the President-Elect and his VP.

She was unarmed, but a significant amount of the protesters were - they had guns and flex cuffs for the purpose of taking hostages, and someone brought a mock gallows to supposedly hang Mike Pence with. At one point, people discovered one of the rooms where senators were hiding, and security had to fend them off. Shots were fired on the senate floor, someone walked into Nancy Pelosi's office and I'm pretty sure someone stole AOC's shoes.

Ashli Babbitt was unarmed, but she was acting as a part of an armed group who were trying to stop the certification of the 2020 election. She climbed through a broken window into Congress, security told her to back down, and she didn't. It's all on video.

Divorcing it from its context is really fucking sus, because Ashli Babbitt had every chance to stop herself.

Okay, so she attended the Trump rally and marched down to Capitol Hill. When people began breaking in and attacking the Capitol police, she could have realised the error of her ways and left. Instead, she got caught up in the fervour with her husband.

They found a broken window - she could have heeded her husband's concerns and not crawled inside, or realised the weight of her actions and potential danger of doing so. But she went inside, knowing full well what she was doing.

When she got inside, she was confronted with security guards who told her to stop - because as we've established, congress was sitting and the President-Elect was in the building and there were armed people with fucking flex cuffs in the building. Literally all she had to do to not get fucking shot was stay away from the guards, and with all the crazy bullshit going on she might have even been able to get away by going back out the window.

But she kept moving towards the guards, and as she was acting in concert with an armed group, she was deemed a threat. So she was shot.

She could have turned away at the gates. She didn't.

She could have stopped herself from entering the Capitol building, something that even her fellow batshit crazy Trumper husband warned her about. She didn't.

She could have stopped and surrendered to Capitol police, or tried to escape out the window. She did neither.

She was shot for a series of justifiable reasons. She was "trespassing" at Capitol Hill through a broken window, in concert with an armed group. She was shot because she didn't listen to the guards when they told her to stop while they had their guns drawn - and the video of this altercation exists, showing that upon being asked to stop, she kept moving towards them. And while it might be exaggerating to say that killing her "saved many lives", the fact remains that she was killed because she was acting in concert with armed protestors whose actions led to the death of a Capitol police officer, who brought flex cuffs for the sake of taking hostages and whose intended goal was to stop the certification of a democratic election.

She shared their views and goals. She had every chance to come to her senses and save herself. She didn't do either.

I'm probably sounding like a broken record, but the context of Ashli Babbitt's death bears repeating. This wasn't a sweet old granny whose sole crime was trespassing. She climbed through a fucking window into the Capitol building, where your fucking President-Elect and all of congress was sitting, as armed protestors walked onto the floor of the senate. She was told to stop by armed guards, and she didn't. That's why she was shot. She wasn't the biggest threat there that day, but she did pose a threat and she did have a violent goal in mind.
