Starts off with black people.

I hadn't realized there was no black people in Witcher till now. Infact, the netflix live show didn't have any if I recall.

The live action show has multiple black actors. Some of the fans threw a shit fit over it.

The Witcher is a Polish book series written by a Polish writer, based on Polish folklore and fantasy. This Polish book series was adapted into a Polish TV series, and then into a series of video games developed in Poland.

The fact that it didn't have any type of diversity before is an insult to marginalized people everywhere.

Fringilla and Istredd (not really a main character but had a ton of screen time). The cast is actually surprisingly diverse considering the source material.

Since it's an allegory for Polish resistance against the Nazis, this is one time it's justified. It's like, "Sorry you faced genocide. But it would've really been a tragedy if you had been persecuted for being Black."

I'm for diversity as much as the next person, but that was lame for Netflix to appropriate someone else's story when it was about their persecution.

Having diversity in the show doesn't really take away from that. And it's not like this was the reason why the majority of the angry people were actually mad about it lol I just googled it and found some really awful forum posts. Just straight up racism.

What pic. From what I see her ethnicity is "unknown" and little is known about her father.

But if you're not blind you can see she's biracial and would be considered black. Skin tone, facial features, hair. They're not Caucasian.

There's always a racist response toward inclusion. But the Witcher's creator, or one of them, expressed the sentiment that they were being robbed of their story by having it redirected to someone else.

It's not always about racism - even if there will always be racists on the internet who get mad whenever a Black person is present.

The Witcher not having any black people was not an issue anyway. It's a medieval European fantasy world, I expect to see Europeans. No one's clamoring for non-Asian diversity in Avatar for example.

There are some people who complain about Fringilla for a story reason later down the line. But at this point I'm almost certain the stuff done by Fringilla later down the line will be done by a new character, if it happens at all.

I'm starting to suspect what Geralt does in the later part of the series will be significantly rewritten if the show gets that far.

It seems race was never a big deal in his original novels, so it really shouldn't be a big deal now, and as long as the characters stay true to who they are, people shouldn't get hung up on it.

poor argument, seeing as there's no history here. unless I missed the day in class where we went over the striga of Temeria.

Now, of they were to redirect the plot to focus heavily on america-centric racial tensions, there would be a strong argument for cultural appropriation. but we haven't seen that, yet

No, and if he ever said anything like that it was most likely about the video games. He is well known to have little respect for games as a story telling medium, and has tried to downplay the popularity they brought to the series in the past. Some of that may have been motivated by him taking a lump sum for the game license instead of a percentage, but he had no faith the game series would be any success in the first place.
