Each week* someone will nominate a match that the rest of us watch and talk about it.

Alright, I'm not sure quite how I got picked to lead the charge here but I think after Friday night, there's only one guy I can conceivably feature.

We're traveling back in time here to a period where CM Punk had long blond hair, wrestled in basketball shorts, came out to his actual best entrance theme, and likely could not have possibly imagined that one day he'd have United Center personnel handing out ice cream bars in his name to an arena of 15,000 people. But one thing has remained consistent in his career - Chicago adores him.

This match may not stand up to some of the incredible tag bouts that ROH would give us in the coming years, but it's still tons of fun. The first half is very Southern-style-tag-derivative with the Saints having some fun at their opponents' expense and clearly reveling in the love they're getting from their hometown before Dem Boys cut the ring off, and the second half brings the nonstop car crash energy that would come to define so many wonderful years in the company with a couple of creative spots. And the whole way through, they're supported by one of the best crowds in the early days of the promotion.

It's cool to see Punk just having fun being in the ring. Here's hoping we get more of that.

and while I know the Briscoes have basically been cancelled there's no denying how talented they were in the ring

I've pretty much handwaved most wrestler cancellations outside of legitimate criminals like the SpeakingOut crowd. The Briscoes having some disturbing opinions doesn't change the fact that they're my favorite in-ring tag team ever; if that makes me a terrible person, so be it I guess.

The amount that's on YouTube alone would probably surprise you, especially for this series where we're not really looking for all-time classics or anything. It's just matches that you find curious or have some kind of significance to you or that, in the case of this one I threw up, was kinda topical.

Dailymotion and Bilibili are the other good resources.

Killswitch Engage is absolutely Punk's best wrestling theme

Despite being the worst actual song

Cult of Personality on the flip side is a great song that is a terrible wrestling theme that only sorta works because Punk has used it so long that it just brings him to mind, which is ultimately a good thing

Miseria is somewhere in the middle, better song than Fire Burns but kinda weird as a wrestling theme too-- I feel like it's TOO hype to really work as a wrestling theme you use all the time. Seems like a song you'd use for a special match from time to time, not a thing you use every week

I do not enjoy watching them wrestle.

I will say my experience with them is HDnet RoH of that explains anything.

Review:

So from the beginning this is already a trip, seeing Colt with the glasses and the cocky swagger is instantly putting me into a time and place. This crowd is so hot for the saints that honestly almost nothing else that happens in the match matters. Indeed, the work is a little whatever, especially when Mark is in the ring. He can't emote, he's not selling the dram and his work lacks snap and intensity. When Jay and Punk are in the ring this thing is at its best, you can feel Jay's desperation. He knows that this is the Saints night and that to win he has to bust out the entire arsenal.

The match ends up built around Punk trying like hell to set up the Pepsi plunge and Colt trying like hell not to lose the match when he gets in the ring. And with all that set up and all that tease the drama of the match is OVER when the Plunge happens. Could've counted to a million. This simple narrative gets cluttered over a bit as we go as they tease a lot of other near falls, which the crowd politely bites on with gusto because theyre hot as fuck for this match, but which I wasn't buying into it.

Still a 4 star special and definitely a fun bit of topicality.
