And it was pretty good until Wings of the Goddess came out, that's when the new devs messed everything up It was almost never "pretty good." Some of the questlines, particularly for the jobs, were good. The main plots may or may not have had good set-ups, but the endings sucked equally so. Prom's main story was an inconsistent mess in which every character changed their motive every three or four quests. Trekking around the world was an obnoxious experience that, for some reason, people continue to defend as if it was actually a good time rather than the game actively impeding you from going anywhere in a reasonable amount of time, regardless of your level. Leveling even one job was a time-consuming chore at the best of times, and you totally had to level at least two that worked well together if you wanted to be part of an endgame party. No, XI was not good. It had good things going for it, and some good ideas, but it wasn't good. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

The biggest problem with FFXI was that the subjob system effectively forced everyone to play the first half of the game two or three times before they could play the second half, which caused a significant number of players to quit after getting to level 50 or so on their preferred job. If there had been no subjobs (or subjobs were automatically leveled), and advanced jobs didn't have to be unlocked (or started at level 30), I think the game would have been a lot more popular.
