Apparently for the 25th anniversary, Bethesda decided to update the Steam version of Quake 1. They gave it a source port that supports modern resolutions, achievements, all of the mission packs (including some recent ones), and you can optionally download Quake 64 as an add-on. Also, if you don't like any of that, the original, unmodified version is still playable in Steam which you can put into a source port of your choice.

This was all free if you already have the Steam version, but if you haven't bought Quake on Steam yet, they did raise the price to account for all the new stuff.

edit: Oh yea, forgot to mention, also includes multiplayer on dedicated servers (as well as the old player hosted servers), and multiplayer bots.

Bethesda updating a game by Id feels a little odd, but I will not complain about quality-of-life updates.

Bethesda has a history of doing this, they did it for Doom when that turned 25, and they have released free (albeit basic) versions of Elder Scrolls 1 and 2, and Wolfenstein 3D on their anniversaries.

Not to mention Id typically releases the source code for their games when they become "obsolete", which is why they tend to have decent source ports compared to something like Unreal or Half Life.

I imagine in another year when that turns 25. Although I never bought that on Steam since I still had the physical CD. I haven't tried on Windows 10, but I remember not having a lot of trouble running it on 7.
