Why would anyone think a successor to the PSP after the DS kicked its ass was a good idea

Vita was pretty great. It's the memory card pricing that killed it.

PSP was successful. Sorry it didnt outsell the most successful portable system of all time. It still did really well in its own right.

The Vita has a solid library and the original model is an amazing piece of hardware. An OLED screen in 2011 was nuts. Switch is just now catching up a decade later.

I'd say it was bad due to the combination of the proprietary storage, battery life, no 5g wifi support, and the device simply not being powerful enough to achieve what it set out to do.

Numerous games were struggling to maintain 30 fps at a 540p resolution. Modding a pstv and overclocking it helps.

It was a great system marred by Sony's inability to properly market shit. It had a ton of potential, but proprietary bullshit pampered its growth. Sony just stopped trying to market it, because they suck.

The Vita had everything it really needed in order to succeed. A big-ass touchscreen, double analog sticks, a touch pad or whatever, AR-games which was a big deal in like 2011, and a decent launch titles that first year with Resistance, Killzone, Uncharted, and Little Big Planet.

The problem was after that first year and it not doing as well as Sony'd hoped, they just gave up. Releasing the system in late December is a stupid choice since it was too late for the holiday rush, launch with no games (the games above all came out in that first year post-release) and had proprietary memory cards that were expensive AF. There were some lazy ports of PS3 games like the various PS2 collections and stuff, but after that first year nothing was worth buying a Vita over.

By like 2014, The Vita was basically forgotten about, and being kept alive by Waifu-stuff and indie games. The only really support Sony gave the Vita in its last 6 years of life was to mess with modders.

No reason to keep marketing a dud.

They were never going to beat Nintendo at handhelds. And the rise of smartphones in the late 2000s eliminated whatever reason they had keep making them. The fact they went and made the Vita anyway was stupid.

PSP sold about 80 million units, which was about the same amount the GBA sold (and more than the 3DS). So it was obviously successful enough to warrant a successor, unless TC wants to say the GBA wasn't successful, meaning the DS should've never been made.

To be fair the DS wasn't supposed to be the successor to the GBA. It was supposed to be a "third pillar" with the Gamecube and GBA being the other two pillars.

I'd love a Vita 2 or something. There was plenty of potential there, and I'd like a mobile gaming device that's not as big and clunky as the Switch's handheld mode. I don't want to game on my phone much because A) I want the battery to last most of the day, and B) it doesn't have any buttons

An All-Digital system clearly works to some extent, since that's becoming the norm now. the PSP Go was just ahead of its time (and also had super overpriced proprietary memory cards)

I really think the whole "third pillar" thing was just what they said to alleviate fears of them abandoning the GameBoy. They wanted it to replace the GameBoy, but they didn't want to risk alienating fans in case it didn't work out.

This. It technically does have these, but for MicroSD cards you need to mod the system, and the TV dock was a (pretty notable) added increase in price.

If we go by that, the PSP easily triumphs over the DS. CDs are much cheaper to produce than cartridges, the Memory Stick Duo was another point of profit for the PSP that the DS didn't have along side the film and music sales through the device.
Now I don't recall the MSRP for new titles for the PSP, but I think it was $50 instead of the standard $40 for the DS.
