I think what's more likely is they'll just evolve their propaganda wing. We're already seeing them on camera saying things like "women will get to keep their rights" while reports on the ground say that women are already being forced indoors. They'll borrow a page from China's book and just keep saying that no abuses are happening as they deny access to global media to confirm and then complain about other nations invading on their sovereignty for trying.

2 decades billions of dollars and how many American soldiers lives and we're back to square one.

that's what happens when you spend 20 years bombing the fuck out of a country, destroying their government and infrastructure, murdering their population, and forcibly installing a government counter to the area's values and history. you end up with a large number of pissed off locals that will bow down when they're held at gunpoint but reset the country when that gun goes away.

how do you handle a terrorist organization made up of the general population pissed off by foreign powers interfering in your country in a way that doesn't involve just killing everyone again?

Ok so I know this is insensitive and short sighted and wrong, not looking to get modded.
But.
Couldn't the US have just killed all the Taliban over the course of 20 years? How were they able to thrive and build and (seemingly) get stronger? Like WASN'T IT OBVIOUS THIS WOULD HAPPEN

I dont think they were the general population. A lot of times the fighting was up in the mountains where the Taliban could easily escape, and explosives along the roads.

If they did whatever was necessary to take them all out quickly then it would amount to even more war crimes than were already committed. We cant just scorch earth the place, everything is now restrained and calculated to the point that the President himself has to give the OK for drone strikes.
