I'm talking about the pre-Origins games here: I've played AC2, Black Flag, and currently trying Syndicate and man it's so bad. They're all so bad. The main things you are doing in these games, traversal, stealth, and combat, none of them feel good or fun. The climbing and jumping around is awkward, slow, unresponsive, and doesn't involve any skill. Stealth is extremely generic and simple, not satisfying at all.

However, combat is that worst offender. What is Syndicate, like the 8th mainline game and they still couldn't make a combat system with any impact or skill? I have nothing against simple combat. Some people compare this combat to the Arkham games, but those games actually have a sense of rhythm and your button-presses correspond well to what you are seeing on screen. Your moves in Arkham have a sense of weight. Not so in Assassin's Creed; your button presses don't really feel like they have much relationship to the flashy animations you see on screen as you slowly chip away at enemy healthbars.

And these are the mechanics you have to deal with as you grind through hours of the typical Ubisoft open-world garbage.

Odyssey has it's host of problems but at least they finally made some decent feeling combat. That makes it better than any of the "classic" AC games.

Same. It still had the repetitive Ubisoft crap, but the core gameplay is actually fun. Can't believe I played an AC game for 60 hours and enjoyed most of it.

I used to call AC my gaming fast food. None of the systems are very deep or even that fun from a strictly mechanics point of view, but some fun stuff is happening on the screen with minimal mental effort. And you get the satisfaction of checking things off a list for completion.

The open world of 2 was also significantly more impressive tech wise when it was new. The sheer NPC count of the first game kind of blew my mind back then.

Pre unity. Assassin's 1,2,Bro,Rev, 3, and Black flag. Were considered top of the line triple open world titles. Now you had rockstar doing its thing. Saints Row, Elder scrolls, final fantasy, gothic, and Minecraft, etc. But you have to understand. When people saw Altair on a horse outside Damascus. People were blown away. Now there's hundreds of games like that. People were getting a little tired of the parkour stuff somewhere around 3.

This is pretty accurate/canon.

Hell, even the final game in the ezio trilogy Revelations is better than what would come after. Sure they milked ezio for all he was worth but better than the crappy games after black flag and before origins.

Alongside the obvious(2, Brohood, BF)I liked Revelations and 3(ship combat is always great).

Odyssey is fun in small doses.

Valhalla is straight fantastic. I LOVE raiding. It's so much fun.

I prefer the older ones for the simple reason of them not being completely full of bullshit sidequests you have to do just to stay on level for the main story

also the fact that they had actual, yknow, assassins, and not just fucking rando dudes not part of the order whatsoever

I know we never agree on anything in these topics but I will give you that... Part of it is just because I don't know the history of that region that well, and so I don't know how accurate or inaccurate it all was. The cities were very underwhelming compared to what we had in Origins and Odyssey, though. And the map looked good at times but otherwise it was just a mesh of brown and green marsh -_-

AC2 is the best $10 game I probably ever bought. AC3 is my favorite game in the series despite me expecting it to be bad and AC4 and Rogue perfected the formula

Origins and Odyssey have some good ideas but eventually regress into the collect-a-thons of the previous games but without any of the charm or incentives to make it worthwhile, which is probably why they're the most popular with people who haven't played other games in the series, go figure

Assassins Creed 3 has the most impressive combat system. Tool combo finishers (garotte, rope dart hanging, etc), wide selection of weapons, assassin recruits to command.

First game to get the mess that was Ezios weapon wheel under control and one of the last few to require more than mashing RB.

Ive only played Black Flag (recently) because I heard that it was the best game in the series (along with Origins).

TCs criticisms are pretty accurate. The combat is awful and the animations on screen arent synced to the timing of your button presses; theres no weighty feel to the swordplay. The parkour can be real finicky when Edward chooses to jump on something you dont want him to jump on. Lots of collectathon bullshit and the cities are feel the same. The story is told really weirdly, how itll jump years into the future without telling the player. Its like a loose chronicle of twenty years in Edwards life but you never know how much time has passed, and it hurts any emotional investment you have in the story. The random breaks to explore present day corporate espionage are weird as fuck and kind of fuck with the pirate plot but I appreciated the change of pace.

Buuuuut the sailing is so exciting and takes a while to get old. When it starts getting repetitive youre then strong enough to take on the legendary ships which are a fun challenge. The sea chanties were a stroke of genius and bump the game up a full point out of 10, IMO. I love all those songs. Theres just enough variety to keep the game somewhat enjoyable until the end (city missions, exploring jungles, naval combat, underwater diving, present day shit), even though none of those individual things are too exciting (except the chanties).

I dont want to play any of the other games in the series except maybe Origins because ancient Egypt sounds cool and just to see how the game has evolved into a more RPG style.

Odyssey only became fun when I learned about the big damage for little health glyph, because then there was no need for bullshit upgrade systems to sneak around and, y'know, actually assassinate people.

Beautiful world, fun character interactions, but it lost focus on the stealth.

origins is the only one I've semi-enjoyed. Mostly for the setting

3 gets a lot of undeserved hate and Black Flag gets a lot of undeserved love imo. 3 had the best combat. BF had some of the worst. And the boat shit was just entirely not my thing. They had multiple stealth ship trailing missions what in the fuck were they thinking
