Disney's Free Guy smashed expectations with a 28M+ opening weekend which is much higher than the teens it was projected thanks to the high reviews and ryan reynolds marketing push. The video game movie is getting rave reviews from movie goers which has been long delayed because of covid..

Sony's Don't Breathe 2 also surpassed expectations slightly to 10.6M while Jungle Cruise and Aretha Franklin's Respect round out the top 4.

Falling even lower from 1st last week to now 5th is the 200M+ big budget film Suicide Squad which earned a 7.75 million, down 70% this weekend despite fanboy and critical praise with high cinemascores. The misfire can be attributed to many things from covid to direct streaming on HBO Max and other platforms but the property has been tarnished already with the previous suicide squad and the characters not being as popular as Marvel with DC having a troubled history with launching franchises for its characters that aren't as big as Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

Box Office numbers are often misunderstood, I think.

For a 200M movie, opening weekend of 28M and 7M on second week really would be a bomb. But this also says that this had a direct to streaming option. They really should include streaming money in these numbers, because it really means nothing when you exclude a large portion of the profit potential...

The issue is whether the studio sees this as a failure or not.

As this is technically the 3rd Suicide Squad-verse movie, which has soured many people on it at this point. since the 1st two were considered bad for various reasons.

Because they let James Gunn make the movie he wanted to make, rather than make it a cooperate product designed by current trends, appealing to the widest demographic possible, and trying to copy Disney.
