There's some weird nonsense where Rean's stats come into play for Valimar's strength, so if Rean isn't built purely around being tanky or having high attack or some other arcane bullshit, the fight is pure pain. A really baffling inclusion

IIRC, it's only Rean's level that plays a role in Valimar's power. If it's truly seeming impossible then your only recourse might be to go fight a bit in the Old Schoolhouse since it's still open.

What level is Rean?

Anyway, if you don't want to grind Rean up general battle strat there is to try and stack and maintain the STR/SPD buff Valimar has. Also each stance Ordine takes should be attacked a certain way so you get the follow-up attack. You can look at a guide to see what part you should attack for what stance.

If you were already doing that then welp might have to level Rean up some. If you have any Shining Pom bait, use it in the Schoolhouse (ideally Floor 1 but it doesn't really matter) to spawn an encounter that guarantees a level up for everyone in the party.

I think it's theoretically possible to win if I get lucky enough with his counter stance and if C literally never gets a link attack off. But spending 40 cp to use the buff is not a winning strategy, because I need to use the counter stance as much as possible

Level 65 should probably be sufficient for Normal and Hard, I think. Nightmare I dunno, might be super RNG dependent if it can be done at all.

Yeah I'm on nightmare. And it is definitely 100% RNG dependant and on me not fucking up a single time but it seems doable. I got him down to 25k and 2/3 on my link attack when he got a link attack on me just now. So if I had additional time I would've won. I just need to do this shit over and over until RNG goes in my favor...yay...

Yeah, it's a dumb fight in general but it's just ridiculous on Nightmare. I usually see it recommended that Rean be at around Level 69 or 70 for it because of how dumb it is.

Alright I abused my dlc privileges and grinded to 70 with free shining pom baits, and then the fight was braindead. Definitely questionable balance decisions!

id probably give the game an 8/10. i dont think it hit the highs that crossbell did, but I recall feeling similarly less-than-thrilled with sky FC. It seems to be in the falcom wheelhouse to take the first entry to go hard on worldbuilding, and start expanding the plot in the later entries. so I get that it didn't really seem to go anywhere. I do think Zero did a much better job as a first game then this one did, but that's okay.

In general I'm not a huge fan of the anime levels rising. The power of friendship was turned up to 11, you're in high school, harem shit means that no actual romance will be written in. I was kind of fine with it in Crossbell because I felt like they handled Lloyd and Elie's relationship pretty well even if they don't ever make it 'canon', but in this game it feels like there's just nothing on that front.

Rean is definitely too perfect but it is what it is, that doesn't bother me too bad. What does bother me is the generic white hair anime demon powerup shit that he gets but maybe they'll make it less generic in the later entries. Probably not, but hopefully. It would be nice if it wasn't in the game at all but WE'LL SEE WHERE IT GOES

as far as good things, the non-PC characters are for the most part, likeable. Sharon and Claire are definitely my new crushes and finding out that Sharon is in Ouroboros was crazy and it seemed like they really brushed over that way too quickly! I feel like they could've made a bigger deal about it, but also I assume they are just respecting new players that don't know anything about the backstory too much so they didn't want to dive into that yet.

the battle system getting off the grid is nice too, trying to position your skills to hit as many things as possible is a little bit more fun when it's not tied to a grid. also the link aspect didn't add too much to how you have to actually strategize, but I enjoyed it still. it is fun to link people together even if there aren't huge effects from it. removing the whole quartz system was pretty different, it definitely dumbs down your decision making but I didn't mind it too much. I am still confused on what the point of having different paths on the orbments is now though, because as far as I can tell it made 0 difference where you put what.

wishes for cs2 will be that they get less anime, and they have canon romances. I feel like I won't get either of those wishes, but thats okay.

series ranking so far for me is azure > sc > zero > 3rd > cs1 > fc

well it also had less of a "world" to build since you're just in Crossbell all the time, but that's also part of its strength because you get attached to that one place

also Rean's ogre power is one of the most interesting things about him!

i mean they can't have 4 games of worldbuilding, surely something will happen at some point!

and I probably wouldn't feel this way as much if I hadn't played crossbell, as I assume many English fans hadn't. everything plot-wise was just rehashing zero and maybe 75% of azure. I doubt that they could stretch the last 25% of azure into all of CS2, but I suppose I will be disappointed if that is what they do. hopefully if thats the case then they can at least add in some erebonia-only stuff that crossbell players don't know anything about

you know how FC and SC were supposed to be one game, but it got too big so they split it up, and FC got all the worldbuilding and SC got most of the plot?

the same thing is true of Cold Steel... except CS1 and 2 were supposed to be the first game which got too big

i don't know how literally true it is but it's definitely truthy

i have heard that cs1/2 and cs3/4 were two different halves, so that makes sense.
and i don't really mind that much! I will hold it against the game, judging it in a vacuum, but it also makes me more excited to play the next one. I like slow burns in general, Xenosaga is still one of my favorite experiences in gaming and that can only be described as a slow burn.
