Every thinking adult in America already knows about systemic racism throughout every aspect of this nation, which is why it should come as no surprise that, as disclosed by Voice of America News in June, this pandemic has exposed the countrys wide racial inequalities. This is based on data released by the CDC that estimates that Native Americans, Latinos and Blacks are two or three times more likely than whites to die of the disease after adjusting for population age differences. And while only 12% of whites under 65 years of age are dying of COVID-19, the rate is 30% for Blacks. It also should come as no surprise, as David A. Ash, a physician and director of the University of Pennsylvanias Center for Health Care Innovation, and Rachel M. Werner, a physician and executive director of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, wrote in The Washington Post in June, If Black patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were cared for in the same hospitals where white patients went, their mortality rate would have been 10% lower. Wow! Shocking, but not surprising. That outrageous 10% disparity was based on data from 44,000 COVID-19 patients in nearly 1,200 hospitals in 41 states and D.C. from January through September 2020. The CDC on July 16 published numbers consistent with what Ash and Werner uncovered. For example, Blacks had rates of COVID-19 hospitalization 2.8 times higher than whites and COVID-19 death 2.0 times higher.

You might wonder, like I did, exactly why Blacks have a higher COVID-19 mortality rate. Is it because some hospitals maliciously plot to mistreat Black patients? The two scholarly physicians say not necessarily. Instead, as they thoughtfully wrote, Black patients have higher COVID-19 mortality because they go to different hospitals than white patients. Its not that some hospitals give worse care to Black patients compared with white patients; its that some hospitals have worse outcomes for both Black and white patients. And Black patients disproportionately go to the hospitals where the outcomes are worse for all. Many forces combine to create this situation, but the common thread is racism. Decades of racial residential segregation have concentrated Black people in some areas and white people in others. Redlining, which limited mortgages in Black neighborhoods during the last century, reinforced and worsened residential segregation.

Not surprising. The narrative in media is going after the vocal anti-vax Trump supporters. If anyone actually looked at the data they'd see different story of which groups arent getting vaccinated.

I'm sure there's lots of factors in play. People in lower income brackets tend to be poorer in health and lack access to good and affordable health care.

But Blacks and Hispanics also have the highest non vaccinated rates. Not sure if it's lack of access (covid vaccine is pretty accessible now) or more hesitancy.

The CDC has admitted that getting the vaccine doesn't prevent infection or transmission. It merely reduces the severity of symptoms (or so they claim). The vaccinated are spreading the virus just as much as the unvaccinated. /facts.

while I have strongly urged my brothers and sisters to get vaxxed, there is a difference between distrusting a government that has an actual history of medical bias and outright assault against black bodies and thinking Bill Gates developed the vaccine using 5G cell towers to make you and your kids gay and steal your freedoms

Fixed

3 of my friends refuse to get vaccinated. There reasoning is because it's not approved by the FDA/finish clinical trials, they won't get vaccinated. They have been more conservative politically recently. I can almost understand the hesitancy, but they only wear masks in places where its mandated, so...

I think years of education and class are big factors. Finished a 4 year or more, follows up on science are far more likely to be vaccinated.

You can say politics can have a play too, since far more Republicans are anti vax.

@DDirtyDastard
This is incorrect.

And misinformation.

You could go to the CDC website and find this out if you wanted to know what they really say. Moderna and Pfizer (mRNA based) are between 90-94% effective at preventing infection. No vaccine is 100%. They also reduce transmission.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/fully-vaccinated-people.html

COVID-19 vaccine efficacy and effectiveness

Evidence demonstrates that the authorized COVID-19 vaccines are both efficacious and effective against symptomatic, laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, including severe forms of the disease. In addition, a growing body of evidence suggests that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines also reduce asymptomatic infection and transmission.

Up to date as of July 27, 2021. and using all the most recent and available data.

The Delta variant is highly transmissible so breakthrough cases are happening and mask wearing has been re-proposed. To say that the "CDC" said the vaxx doesn't prevent infection or transmission is a lie.

Just admit you have no idea how vaccines work. But do not post misinformation.

Honestly, the only way to fight back against this is to promote higher vaccination rates in minority groups. There's a lot of intrinsic distrust, although some of it isn't necessarily targeted at the right people, and there's plenty of ground that can be made by pointing that out and talking about it.

This article shoots itself in the foot by not even addressing the most obvious reason why mortality rates might be different: vaccination rates. Distrust in the public health / medical establishment.

The problem being that stuff like the Tuskegee Experiment were deplorable because they WITHHELD treatment.

I've really tried to get my AA patients vaccinated, but I think a lot of this also comes from church and family members who put a lot of pressure on them to "not fall for it." It's frustrating - COVID19 has devastated the AA community socially, economically and even mortally. They deserve better.

I don't know what to do. I just want people to understand that this is real and we are all in it together.
