So a bit of back story about this particular client. He bought a car from a dealership, it's financed so he needed full coverage of course. Insurance in Louisiana is expensive as hell (highest or 2nd highest in the nation), so he didn't get any extra coverage. No uninsured motorist, no rental car, no roadside. Deductibles set at $1000 which is the maximum the finance company would allow. Now when I was writing the policy the system discovered his girlfriend who lived with him as a potential driver. When that happens, I have to either list them on the policy as a driver, or exclude them which means they would specifically not be covered on the policy. I asked him about her, and he said she had wrecks in the past and he couldn't add her because it would make the rate go up too high. So I told him I would have to exclude her then and that she wouldn't be covered if she were to drive the vehicle, basically advising him not to let her drive it if we do this. He agreed, and the policy was written

2 months later to today, he called me and asked for the number to file a claim because his girlfriend got in a wreck and probably broke her arm. Well I gave him the number but I told him that unfortunately she's most likely not going to be covered because we excluded her when we wrote the policy. He proceeded to get mad and cussed me out. Whatever I understand they had something shitty happen to them and he's probably just venting in general so I let him go on for a couple minutes, then told him to call the claims department anyway because it can't hurt to try at least. So he's currently doing that.

Just wanted to let yall know if you know someone is going to be driving your car, especially if they live with you, make sure they're on your policy with you. Don't try to hide it to keep your rates low, or don't allow the other person to drive (especially if they've had accidents before), or if you can't afford the rate when the policy information is accurate, don't buy the car you can't afford. Now this person is about to have a totaled car that won't be reimbursed with a brand new loan that the finance company is going to want to be paid for, and a girlfriend with injuries that won't be covered regardless of who was at fault in the accident.

Sounds like she's a terrible driver. How does someone get in that many accidents?

What are the rules if you don't live with someone? If I want to borrow someone's truck and I get in an accident and its my fault, who's insurance is used?

High deductible minimal requirement policies are bad, add in excluded drivers and it's even worse.

This is also good advice for buying insurance, don't just get a shitty policy that covers the basics, that dude's gonna be out a lot of money because of his shitty coverage

Honestly car insurance is way too complicated than it needs to be and I wish the government would regulate policies.

Permissive operators are a thing, if you borrowed someone's car the damages would be covered under their policy. The idea is that you don't want to conceal regular household drivers.

Every single state regulates insurance providers. Basic auto insurance is pretty easy to understand with a little research or an agent to explain things to you. Often times just reading the policy will answer most of your questions.

That's generally fine, this pertains to household members or someone that regularly drives the vehicle.

The biggest culprit of this from my experience is a lot of parents of teens try to not tell the insurance companies about their newly eligible drivers because it makes the rate shoot up. I had one recently where this happened and Progressive still covered the damages to the car but they billed the customer extra premium backdated to when their kid got their license (which was like 4 or 5 months) and added him to the policy going forward.

Nobody explained to me about car rentals policy. So when I had my wreck I basically had to go buy another car right away. I feel like that should've been included since I asked for the best policy.

All the little things that people would need should be included.
