Maybe Im just cynical and looking too much into things, but one thing that rubs me a bit wrong about this video is that it seems to me that shes purposefully framing her arguments in a way thats designed to protect her from criticism from what she considers to be purists. It reads to me at times like a preemptive posturing against, for example, people who criticize some of her more problematic takes on things like gender.

Or maybe Im just sublimating my own feelings of ressentiment. I dunno.

Anyways I like the video, it was very informative, entertaining (as to be expected from Nat), and gave me a lot to think about, which is exactly what you look for in a video essay about philosophy. I give it a 9/10 overall.

Well the bit at the end where she talks about the online left being too radical, which is obviously something shes done before (she likes to frame herself as a sort of Enlightened Centrist of the leftvaguely anti-capitalist, but without taking specific stances beyond supporting some socialist reforms to neoliberal democracy, pro trans rights but not really understanding all the weird non-binary stuff that the youths are doing, etc.) and I dont have a problem with that, but in that bit about the online left she attributes the infighting and criticism that the left levels at itself not as valid critique or genuine discussion but as emotionally driven, irrational diatribe brought on by subconscious resentment over an inability to piece together political victories or otherwise wield political power. This comes across as self-serving to me, when she herself is often the subject of critique from points of view which are further to the left than she is.

Also the entire segment where she talks about Marie Antoinette and how she was totally scapegoated and wrongfully maligned and was actually completely innocent while dressing herself up as Marie Antoinette, feels a bit on the nose, doesnt it?

She's a video essayist, mostly philosophy and politics with a heavy focus on history. She's considered a leftist Youtuber.

Her framing devices tend to be focused around extravagant displays of herself and set dressing, self-deprecation, and often linking things back around to the transgender connection, being trans herself.

In CP's defence, she tends to get a ton of mostly-unwarranted hate from people who seem interested in following her just to hate on things she does. The "Purists" are predominantly people who do things like "you once worked with a guy who wasn't 100% in line with my opinions? That means you, all your friends, and all their friends need to be flooded with hate!". I think she's been "cancelled" by this at least twice now.

Though I can see where your coming from and can agree that can be an issue. Even if I can get why she might be doing it.

It's an issue which was long addressed and put to rest. Her producer recommended him, unware of his views until after and apologised for it. Natalie hasn't really commented on it to my knowledge, and not sure she's said anything that suggests she agrees with his opinion.

Could it be nice if she said she didn't? (if she indeed doesn't agree) Sure, but I don't see it changing anything. Those who want to hate her will still hate her, and everyone else has moved and accepted the producers apology on the matter.

Sure but that doesnt somehow retroactively make the criticism itself invalid. And yeah she gets a ton of people who sling hate and abuse her way, but shes a political Youtuber, that kinda comes with the territory, no? But lumping valid criticism in with the harassment and abuse as a means of rejecting it outright is intellectually dishonest.

My point was mostly that at this point it's a worthless discussion as most people have made their minds up on it. If you want to object to her including him in the past, then fine. I agree she shouldn't have. But it just feels like people wanting to bring up the same point and demand she give an answer when one has already been given.

I gotta disagree here. While she often presents both sides, she generally goes into extensive detail why one side is wrong. Merely acknowledging the centrist argument isn't the same thing as being a centrist.

I wouldnt say she takes a centrist position in most of the content she puts out. She presents both sides as fairly as possible while showing the faults with one (or both) of them.
