I sort of agree, I think the first half is probably better but I like a lot of things about the second half.

out of the four main characters, Mello is probably my favorite, and I liked how *second half spoilers* Near kept trolling Light

Holy fuck I forgot the detail that Light wrote a love note on a page torn from the Death Note, forcing the carjacker to see him.

That's so fucking clever and fun. The writer came up with so many great scenarios using the rules of the Death Note. A couple later on ARE more contrived (like the memory loss stuff) but a lot is still great

The audio direction here was fantastic with guy getting hit by the car and everything going silent

Wow the suicide episode really shows how right L is about Light being so childish at heart, taunting his victim like a schoolyard bully at the end.

Haven't seen it yet but I heard the second part cuts a lot from the manga, which tbh sounds like it could be partially responsible for some quality or pacing issues if it has em.

Death Note is very clever in that the amnesia arc practically makes Light into a minor character, and he actually feels like a villain when he remains them. Good job of reframing who the audience sympathizes with

Oh my GOD I forgot about this.

The cacophony of rain almost overpowering the voices of the main characters on screen. L sadly talking hearing the ring of a bell. Smirkingly beckoning Light to join him and the rainfall and get drenched.

It's such an emotionally quiet and somber scene

And then L just looks over "Tell me Light. From the moment you were born, has there ever actually been a time where you told the truth?"

And then deafening silence

L's fatal flaw is his refusal to use violence like Mello, or cheat like Near

There was one really good manga short spin off that takes place like 10 years later with a new kid getting the Death Note. Without spoiling it, the kid uses the Death Note in a very interesting way and kinda pissed off the king of the shinigami or whatever they're called.

That's just how the scene reads to me. He begins with a fake front of being distraught but it blends into real when the dad actually flatlines.

Yeah I have to agree here. By this point in the story Light was so far gone, he felt nothing when his father dies.

OK I see how this is getting a little silly. Because the writing is focusing less on the train of the logic of the opposing forces, and more on the character drama of the trust Light's built up starting to collapse. So things just kinda happen like the Sakura TV guy apparently being contacted to expose the location of Near's HQ even though Sakura TV is a Japanese channel
