Thinks we can drive from San Diego to San Fran and do everything in one day.

I told him we'd have about 16 hours of driving with no traffic that day. I countered him with a drive to LA and it blew his mind it would take us like 3 hours lol.

Very common occurrence with my out of state fam

Wait until you talk to people from Europe who don't understand you can't just go to NY/Dallas/Chicago/LA in a few days.

And if they want to go to places like Grand Canyon/ect even more screwed.

People from smaller states often fall into this way of thinking. In the northeast at least, you can drive for hours and cross several state lines, but down here in Texas you can drive for the same amount of time, still be in Texas, and see fucking nothing.

I drove through Texas last year on a cross country trip and i loved it but it tripped me out how i can go through the state and the fastest route was through small cities instead of interstates for most of the way

West of the Mississippi River, the states are just massive in general. I think a decent number of people know that California and Texas are massive, but theyd be shocked about how big states like Arizona, Nevada, Utah or Idaho are.

Aside from California being huge, part of the problem is also the traffic that slows everything down.

Something that could be a realistic driving distance somewhere else isn't because it takes 50%-100% longer.

I remember seeing a quote that was like "People in California don't measure in miles, they measure in hours" >_>

Eh, on my roadtrips traffic isnt too bad until you hit LA and SF. Sometimes on the way to vegas you hit the traffic depending on the time of year and day.

but my family was always a leave at 5am kinda people

Neat. Might sound weird to say, but I never knew how small Greenland was until just now by playing around on that site. On maps, it always appears absolutely gigantic, but its cause by it being stretched out due to the nature of maps as you approach the poles. That site takes the curvature into consideration when dragging stuff around, and Greenland is far smaller than Id previously thought it to be.

That's anywhere with a lot of people. Going 10 miles in NYC can take anywhere from 20 mins to 3 hours depending on how bad the traffic is.

It might be a lot smaller than it appears on most maps due to curvature, but it's still pretty big. Take the southern point of Greenland and place it on the southern point of Texas and Greenland still reaches Canada and covers nearly every Great Plains state. That's a big island.

I lived on the East Coast a few years and was amazed at how little people outside the West understand about CA.

  1. It is bigger than Japan
  2. The cities of San Francisco, Boston, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Clevelandplus the island of Manhattan can fit within the Los Angeles city limit simultaneously. You can fit another 8 or so "major" cities within the rest of the county of Los Angeles. Next county over from L.A. is San Bernardino County which dwarfs L.A. county geographically, if not in population.
  3. They assume the weather is the same throughout the state.
  4. They assume 2-3 big fires in remote areas affects the whole state. Those fires are usually hundreds of hundreds of miles from populated areas.
  5. They assume the terrain is all the same - we have deserts - Joshua Tree, High desert, and Sahara sands style, which are all completely different, forests, snow capped mountains, Midwestern style plains, and beaches. Even the beaches can be vastly different.

The strangest thing to me is that people in CA used miles/distance as opposed to time as a unit of measure. "Oh it would take us about 70 miles to go from LA to Lake Forest." As opposed to, "oh it takes like 2 hours to get from Pittsburgh to Morgantown." That was definitely different for me to understand.

I've learned not to argue drive times with your type. Worked with a guy who claimed to drive from Wilshire and Western in Los Angeles to the San Diego airport in 40 minutes.

Then claimed to drive from L.A. to Vegas in 2 hours. Then L.A. to El Paso in 5 hours.

Keep the pedal to the metal Parnelli Jones

Good for you.
