Well if they called it a t pad sophisticated gamers might have tried to put their tea cups on their controllers which would have resulted in spilled drinks and possibly lawsuits.

Is your intention here to mock foolish gamers, or more likely, ignorant non-gamers, who ask this question about the widget on any common video game controller that allows the player to control the direction in which he or she wishes to move the avatar character, the cursor, among other things that can be controlled in a video game?

It's short for "dimensional padawan," referring to the traditional method of making it by taking Jedi students that failed their classes and forcing them through a dimensional vortex that compressed them into a plastic cross shape. For reasons unknown, one of these vortices opened directly into one of Nintendo's factories in the early 80's, helping them develop the controllers that would shape the future of gaming forever.

it originally stood for 'down' because the first d-pads only had the down arrow. now the 'd' is just an anachronism
