Google and the three major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, will all support a new communications protocol on Android smartphones starting in 2022, a move that puts pressure on Apple to adopt a new cross-platform messaging standard and may present a challenge to iMessage.

Apple has not implemented support for RCS, leaving iPhone users behind in terms of features when they cannot use iMessage. When RCS sees a complete Android rollout, text messages on Android phones will be end-to-end encrypted. iPhone to iPhone communications are end-to-end encrypted thanks to iMessage, but as a consequence of this change, texts between Android users and iPhone users will continue to be less secure because of Apple's decision to use SMS over RCS.

Ruh roh. Apple once again behind the curve. How will Applebots spin this one?

Discuss.

Apple is kind of in a tough spot for this.

On the one hand, they're going to heavily drag their feet in adopting the RCS standard into iMessage because the features of iMessage (E2EE, read receipts, sharing larger media files, etc) are a big reason why people use iPhones in the first place. Take that away, and that's one less reason why people would choose iPhones over other devices.

On the other hand, it goes against Apple's claim for promoting user privacy and security. If they're truly about protecting user information, then they should gladly adopt the RCS standard so as to protect not just iOS users but all users who communicate with iOS devices correct? Otherwise, an iPhone would use iMessage to communicate with an Android device over SMS and neither devices would be "secure" in that instance.

But now that all 3 US carriers are on board with RCS, that puts an enormous amount of pressure on Apple. If they don't fall in line, then it's Apple who would be holding all users back from having secure conversations through texting. Let's see what they do.

Apple and Google aren't your friends. Being loyal to either one is some real dumbshit, smoothbrain stuff. Just be happy they're competing and forced to innovate.

I think I'd trust Apple's reticence to adopt.

I'm pretty sure they know something we don't.

Plus looking at how Samsung behaves with Dex or Google behaves with... Well... anything, early adoption doesn't not equate to safety. An older platform is not necessarily a more unsafe one.

for it to be a competitor means people have to care about it. Nobody cares about android messages, especially since if people DID care, they'd just use WhatsApp, which is free and the same thing as normal texting

Moot point to bring up WhasApp as that's the most popular texting platform in the world by far. On the international stage, nobody gives a crap about IMessage or Google Messages.

Apple knows Google is an absolute mess in the OS scene nowadays with their constant trash UI changes, bugs galore, ads first approach and abandoning everything they come up with. Apple markershare has just been going up, especially here.

Apple went backwards. They started expensive, but now with offerings like the iPhone Mini, SE and the insanely powerful M1 Air (which is on sale for $750 this week), they've been trying to increase their share even further and succeeding.

Sucks since I love Android, but they've been really slacking lately, especially if you're a heavy user. I figured it would have increased competition, but none of the competitors, what's left that is, is showing up with anything worthwhile. RCS itself is like 5 years too late.

Like what

Trying setting up Samsung Dex on an average TV

Ipad... Works to cast the screen on pretty much everything

Android has all of these nonstandard solutions that break with every upgrade and it's not worth the hassle
