Apple is kind of in a tough spot for this.

On the one hand, they're going to heavily drag their feet in adopting the RCS standard into iMessage because the features of iMessage (E2EE, read receipts, sharing larger media files, etc) are a big reason why people use iPhones in the first place. Take that away, and that's one less reason why people would choose iPhones over other devices.

On the other hand, it goes against Apple's claim for promoting user privacy and security. If they're truly about protecting user information, then they should gladly adopt the RCS standard so as to protect not just iOS users but all users who communicate with iOS devices correct? Otherwise, an iPhone would use iMessage to communicate with an Android device over SMS and neither devices would be "secure" in that instance.

But now that all 3 US carriers are on board with RCS, that puts an enormous amount of pressure on Apple. If they don't fall in line, then it's Apple who would be holding all users back from having secure conversations through texting. Let's see what they do.
