I mean personally I love golf games. I'm planning to get Mario Golf next week. If it's not your bag, it's not your bag.

I would argue that while the sentiment is understandable - why not create new IPs instead of relying on the same stable of classic franchises - the reason I don't mind when it comes to Nintendo is because the games they do put out for those franchises are almost always excellent.

Zelda has had some rough spots, but we're at a point where even Skyward Sword is getting vindicated with its Switch port. The stand-out "bad games" of the franchise are Zelda II, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, and each one of them has its fans and has been vindicated in some way - there are the third party CDi games but no-one takes them even remotely seriously.

Likewise with Mario - Super Mario Sunshine copped flak, but it was vindicated in later years and it's considered a classic. Bit of an oddball maybe, but a classic all the same. Odyssey got dogpiled for its moon mechanic, at least on here, but that game had incredible visuals, sound and gameplay. The bad games, again, are third party titles released on non-Nintendo hardware.

It's one thing to trot out middling sequel after middling sequel. Look at Sonic the Hedgehog - the good games are really good, sure, but there are just as many misses as there are hits. Look at Mega Man - the ones that everyone remember as all-time classics are 2 and X. Between the classic and X series, there are 19 games - the other ones aren't necessarily terrible, but it's widely agreed that they don't meet the standard of quality set by 2 and X. So it's understandable that people see a stable of consistent franchises and go "why don't they branch out more?" - there's a precedent set by other companies to cram out low-quality sequels to bank on the franchise.

But it's another thing entirely to keep producing quality games in a legacy franchise. And I would argue that this is what Nintendo are doing.

At least in Nintendo's case, you know that there's a level of quality that each of their big franchises meet with each release. When you pick up a Mario or a Zelda game, it's a reasonable assumption that it's going to be good. Maybe you won't like it as much as other games in the series, everyone remembers their first, but can you truly say that the past 5 Mario or Zelda titles have been outright bad? Or even middling?

The sentiment H3 expresses is understandable and if that's how you feel, that's how you feel. Personally, if the games are good, I don't care. Thank god I'm not a Star Fox fan though, lmao

No 3d Mario apart from direct sequels are alike. To complain Nintendo is not innovative is idiotic and shows you don't actually play the games.

In this kase, it really isn't when people blatantly have no interest in the actual new IPs: Splatoon and ARMs. What's the point of building an entirely new universe of characters, locations, and lore, when the majority of your fans are foaming at the mouth for a new LoZ/Metroid? Why kome up with a new type of platformer when you have Mario, DK, Yoshi, Wario, Kirby, ect? Why make a new sports/racing/party franchise when you're (for better or worse) tryna drop a new game-changing gimmick on most new Mario sports/racing/party games?

Not being impressed with the Switch's first-party line up thus far is fair, but when folks blame it on the lack of new IPs, I just start hearing white noise.
