Honestly I don't get this at all. For most people unless you are at work, the most you would have to wear a mask like 30 mins in a store. How and why is this an issue.

1. it's all part of the GOP tactic of downplaying covid as much as possible. their first line of defense against any shutdowns, closures etc (that cost them money) is to downplay the virus as not a threat
2. a big part of the GOP's core mantra is "you can't tell me what to do!". they view being told to wear masks, or to do literally anything they don't want to, as a gross infringement of their "freedoms". i swear that a significant chunk of the American population would self suffocate on general principle if the government told them to breathe.
3. another part of the GOP's core belief system is selfishness and prioritization of the self above everything else. asking them to do something on behalf of others is "big guvmint soschizm". a big reason masks are good is because they protect others and are less about you, so of course the GOP has turned this into "you cant make me take responsibility for anyone else".

Two sides:

1. Can't tell me what do do!! Covid is a hoax and wearing mask makes you sick!

2. I am vaccinated and fuck all the people who are not so I will not wear a mask ever again.

I live in Florida, and I don't know if it's like this elsewhere but I've noticed that when I go to the grocery store or something, almost all the people still wearing masks are POC. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's been my observation.

Masks have come to represent a lot of different things in this country, but it's the divide that is most noticeable

Because wearing masks is an inconvenience, however minor, and a lot of people's views of things are defined entirely by how convenient those things are for themselves with a possible dash of how good they feel about themselves for doing it. Not exactly limited to the hardcore anti-mask crowd either, see all the "I wore masks up until now, but I won't anymore because I don't care, I've done my part" types. They felt like they were doing the right thing at first so they wore masks, then they decided it was too inconvenient and not special anymore so now they believe it's pointless.

I'm curious who the "them" is in this scenario, because the vast majority of businesses requiring masks are not profiting from people buying masks, and neither is the govt (which isn't even requiring people to wear them)

I know it isn't for protecting people. There are ways that the government can make restrictions on certain things, but they won't since money is involved. Restriction that can help people. But of course they don't focus on that and only focus on mask.
