Now don't get me wrong: I think there's a lot of really cool ideas in it, some cool scenes and moments, etc. The cast is pretty fucking dope too.

I do think it could have been a fantastic sci-fi horror if the studio hadn't gutted it of most it's really gory, fucked up scenes, and the movie suffers greatly from that gutting.

That said, I think the only reason genre fans defend it so heavily nowadays is purely out of such a slim number of truly good sci-fi horror films to choose from. Especially ones that actually go truly gory. So I get it, especially as a fan of the genre, but it just doesn't hold up IMO.

Overall, I think it's a sci-fi horror that had a lot of potential, but got irreparably damaged by studio meddling, and if I'm gonna rewatch a sci-fi horror movie, I'm far more likely to hit up Alien, The Thing, Annihilation, Sunshine, hell, probably even Slither if I'm being honest.

I'd absolutely love a remake done well though; it has a fuck ton of cool ideas that I'd love to see someone go all the way with. Same with Pandorum, another sci-fi horror with wasted potential IMO.

Mouth of Madness is solid, I need to give it a rewatch, it's been a hot minute since I've seen it.

I agree completely. It has some really good shit in it, some cool ideas and lore, and I don't even mind the twist honestly, but the execution was... rough, at best.

And good god it has some of the worst editing I've ever fucking seen. Like, painfully bad editing. I don't know if I can even sit through a rewatch just because of the atrocious editing in that movie.

I've never really been able to put my finger on what went wrong with Event Horizon. It looks so cheap, but had a huge budget for a horror. The script is weird. The direction is flat and lacks any sense of cinema.

I really, really want to love it, because "Lovecraft x Heart of Darkness in Space" is great in theory.

Oh fuck, tag for fucking later

I'm a bit of an Event Horizon fanboy, though I fully admit it has a lot of flaws. I enjoy people ripping into it just as much as I do throwing it on in the background and enjoying the ridiculousness

IIRC the movie really got sliced up and cut down before release.

I think it had potential to be a brilliant movie, but it's one of those films that really needed to be a slow-burn to build up the atmosphere and terror, and in a bid to cut it to a 90-odd minute run time, they left in all the scares, but cut out everything that would have actually made them scary.

The film we got was an absolute mess, but it could have been so good.

I'm trying to figure out exactly where Pandorum went wrong...the set up was amazing, and even the gradual exploration of the ship... the pay off of *what* happened wasn't terrible but just.. meh? Then the ending with the fights (especially the child getting the guy killed) just seemed.. unnecessary?.
