Authorities in California have charged a family of a baby sex reveal last summer with multiple felony including involuntary manslaughter. The couple is due to go back to court in September. The Family so far has plead not guilty to all charges.

I guess guilt would depend on the instructions for the machine. If the machine is known to generate enough heat so as to cause a fire if set on/next to flammable materials, throw the book at them. If it's a case of a malfunction, then I just see it as a tragic accident that could have happened with any dumb vanity party.
