A lot of movies in the past few decades have the disclaimer that "no animals were harmed in the making of this film"

so sometime between all the horses (and people) being killed during shooting of Ben-Hur and modern movies, they must have stopped harming animals.

Around the western release of Milo and Otis (so like late 80s), given that they went through like 10 kittens in the making of that film because they kept drowning in a river.

The disclaimer is often false. Dustin Hoffman made a television show about horse racing recently where 4 horses died during production. The show was shut down by the police because 4 horses was too many

Supposedly the story behind that is the animal was going to be sacrificed in a ritualistic way by the natives regardless, so Coppola figured he may as well use portions of it in the film

In the 00s I was into East Asian period stuff and the British film board would require that they edit out scenes of tripwires being used on horses and it made me angry they were censoring my art.

Speaking of, back in 2006 me and a bunch of people were getting ready for a party and we threw it on some nature channel.

The man was eating a raw dead zebra. This wasn't fiction. It was on Natural History or Discovery.

We were all disturbed.

Edit: The guy eating it was the host btw.

Oh I confused that movie with homeward bound. That one is American produced right?

I don't think the stuff about Milo and Otis was ever verified. If I recall correctly, there was some strong concern expressed about the treatment of the animals in the movie, but then nobody actually looked into it, likely because its a Japanese film.

Reportedly, Hollywood started cracking down on animal cruelty after One Million B.C. in 1940. The movie used real lizards for dinosaurs and sadly killed some of them.

It wasn't the last time that an animal was killed in an American production, but it was what lead to the Human Society's involvement.

So yeah, I just spent an hour or so looking for information about Milo and Otis, and the only new thing I found is that a reddit or Quora user watched the Japanese DVD has a making-of featurette which debunks a couple of the claims of animal abuse in the movie.

Not the making of itself. I didn't find that. I found a reddit or Quora post (I don't remember which, and I can't find it anymore, lol). Just more hearsay, which I can't even find any more. The accusations themselves, of course, are still hearsay, its just hilarious that I looked into the matter for the first time in five years and pretty much found jack shit.

that's fucked up. I never knew that (seen the movie 20+ times).

Apocalypse Now (1979) definitely shows an actual water buffalo being ritualistically slaughtered it's fucked up. Maybe they got around the law because the ppl were going to kill it anyway and it's an indigenous culture but goddamn.

The worst I heard about was when theyd film those big medieval or ancient battles back in the day where both armies just charge straight into each other, they used to just have the horses actually run into each other. Terrifying. Cant even imagine how many horses suffered through that.

It was a little of both. The snake was someone's pet that snuck into the cabin. The director then came up with a scene idea where the snake dies that wasn't ever part of the script in the first place.

When the owner found out they had killed it he had to be physically restrained.

I literally just watched a terrible movie called far and away where Tom cruise punches a horse

Even if it was simulated, that was a terrible scene because in the context we were supposed to root for tom cruise to do that.

In Cannibal Halocaust, when they shot the scene where they kill the turtle something went wrong so they had to kill another turtle in the 2nd take
