but if the alt-controvery was all on amy, and amy and raytan were separate individuals, why does raytan get blamed? Or was the suspicion that amy was really a raytan alt all along?

Possibly in XI, though it's hard to say who would have won. I wasn't participating then. I don't even know which side amy was on for Gilgamesh vs Vivi, and there was also a cheater for Laguna, who got 3rd. Very possible an FFX character wins that year as they did very well.

Actually, Zidane might not have necessarily won XII, either. Certainly he beats Ashe either way if he makes it, but maybe he doesn't and Rydia or Tidus win. Very similar to the year before where Kain and Yuna were 4th and 5th.

To shift gears a bit, we have 6 soft boots left this contest. I wound up looking through past results for fun and here are all the characters to appear in at least 5 contests who have never been soft-booted. This doesn't really mean anything, I just thought it was interesting.

What did they do wrong if USF was just making saves?

UltraAirForce was the Laguna cheater. He literally had 50+ alts, maybe 100? He used maybe 3 or 4 of them for this contest, though I can't remember any of their names. The one alt name I can remember is LargeLongSword, which was used to host some other contest he made about swords.

Oh, was he also the Mulan cheater? That sounds vaguely familiar now that you mention it. I didn't realize there was any cheating in a Pokemon contest.

I said key account because that was the main one that had participated earlier on, but then they started saving with like 5+ alts in the later rounds before it was called out.

And yeah, I remember them cheating for Mulan in Disney and in Pokemon... it's been so long I don't remember, but I remember being pretty annoyed with it because they kept supported a bunch of Pokemon I hated lol

Yeah, they are equal - I used Vayne as a template and forgot to replace that when it got wiped from my posting box.

Anyway, UltraAirForce started hitting multiple B8 contests all at once (my primary concern was VGMC at that time), so I decided to start sleuthing by googling all the suspicious usernames and digging through the cache. B8 was behind an account level block at that time, but fortunately they had been dumb enough to do the same thing repeatedly across multiple game boards. I ended up finding about 40 names, at which point I asked a mod about it. All the names and more I hadn't caught were on the same usermap, so I made a topic here asking UAF if they knew any of those names. At that point, even the most stubborn contest hosts finally stopped counting their votes.

Then I recruited some people to start saving in SMFFFC, and one of them, Zea, noticed that porchy somehow constantly managed to be one of the first savers, even despite raytan's round times being all over the place. This was doubly important because raytan used the same "never save first" policy I do, which meant he could save immediately. The details on this particular part are a bit fuzzier to me because I didn't do most of the legwork, but the end result was that I asked a mod about their usermap, not at all expecting them to tell me that they were all linked to both amy and raytan.

I did enjoy IX! Garland was on my shortlist of new nominations this year, and Steiner would be a high priority for me if he was here. I'm familiar with like twice as many characters this year lol. On the one hand that means there's so many characters I'd be happy to see do well, on the other it means there's too many I care about that I can't save them all!

But I am still a Tidus fan, and thus can only see amy as a villain, even if she hadn't cheated.

If usermaps are tied to cookies or IP addresses and they shared the same computer at some point, they'd be on the same usermap?

Also glad you liked FF9 (I figured you would!) though that is the downside, the more you play, the more you want to save.

Doesn't matter all too much these days I suppose. But tell that to the 6am Sunday rounds when I was at work and the first save didn't roll in until 17 minutes later.

Cecil was eliminated in XX because of that policy so it certainly mattered then. And we've had a few rounds where there was only 1 save in the next hour and there weren't any holders so the earliest person was able to make it. But it's also like FFD said, it probably matters less nowadays than at a time where minutes could go by before someone else saving.

Though since we're facing some edge-H4 situations with the next rule change, we might run into a similar situations soon enough. The early bird gets the worm, and the potential extra save!

Well I didn't know if it would be the kind of game that lends itself to a playthrough topic the way standard JRPGs and VNs do, and I also figured there wouldn't be much interest in that game honestly. But I can try one anyway whenever I get around to it!
