Its a shitty situation. I dont know what the right thing to do is. I want troops home but also we should not be leaving people behind who will be killed. They helped us and now we are not helping them when they need it.
There are only about 2,000 troops over there anyways. I doubt they can so much outside of guarding a few key officials. You can easily have private security do that. Ultimately, the US presence is mostly symbolic at this point. There is little public will to have troops stationed in that wasteland

If that's the case then we might as well imprison every president for "war crimes" lol

we have military bases in like every country around the world.

Were the hostile foreign power

Only works when those bases are *unwanted* and being used to occupy those nations. (Which is probably the case somewhere. I know that the Japanese government likes the US there, but the people might want us out... although that's not occupying)

I think maybe the worst thing about trump's presidency is that people seem to be nostalgia goggling GWB now. Dude was possibly the worst president this country has ever seen

GWB wouldn't even be close. Even in his case, the problem was PR. He was viewed negatively despite never going as far as Obama did when it came to violating human rights (with the exception of "enhanced interrogation" and extraordinary rendition) and iirc he was never as opposed to the extent Obama was concerning basic freedoms (whereas Obama made John Adams like a nice guy).

In general, the next time a Republican gets into office, the machine is going to go after them so hard it'll make people nostalgic for Trump. That's what they do.

And the symbolism more than anything has helped to keep some things in check. The fact that Biden moved the withdrawal date to 9/11 is possibly the biggest way of letting terrorists know they won.

And sure, it's a bad situation and nobody really wants to be there, but we toppled the government so there's some obligation to be there until gets put back in place... although if they reinstated the draft for it, I'd be 100% against US involvement there. Voluntary enlistment makes US involvement seem less awful.

People give Obama a lot of flack for the drones, but honestly how else could you play the war? Boots on the ground are only good at getting shot at and blown up by ieds, but the drones allow us to attack the enemy without any risk of retaliation. Same result: dead enemy, but with far less risk to US troops. If we where using conventional methods we would have been out of the war long ago. The only reason you can even contemplate staying is because the drones do some much of the dirty work now. That is how you can control a country roughly the size of Texas with 2,500 troops.
