Its a show that pretends you can't both be smart and not an asshole, so a lot of stupid assholes get to think people don't like them because they're smart, instead of because they're awful.

Otherwise, its pretty much just Sci-Fi Family Guy

The idea you need to be smart to understand it is a fallacy.

It's a show that uses blatant stupidity under the facade of Science Fiction to make idiotic mouth breathers feel smart. It essentially does the same thing as Big Bang Theory but it's actually funny.

Hey now the first season of BBT was decent. It started to get bad when they changed Cuoco's character, and toned down the nerdy references to be "Ha ha nerds" instead.

The show makes use of a lot of philosophical ideas, so in a way I guess you can say it's for smart people, but if you know the philosophical references it's just an edgy show and not much else. The biggest theme in the show is Schopenhauer's philosophical pessimism. Existence is pain, supremacy of will, etc.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

Didn't a Rick and Morty fan throw a temper tantrum and dance on a McDonald's counter because they didn't have a dumb meme sauce?

You definitely need doctorates in human and molecular biology to fully appreciate the latest episode.
Oh God it was bad. Like the reheated corpse of Raising Gazorpazorp, an episode that was already dated and unfunny back in Season 1. It's usually really good though.

While there are so episodes that do hit on heavy themes. Honestly it seems more of people reading into it than the show really being about some of those themes. Beyond that, a show with horse size male seeds, and a man turning himself into a pickle is not what I would call intellectual.

It's dumb smart, I don't think the creators contest that. To an extent I'd say it's just more dense with a lot of jokes and material and concepta in a short span so it requires some thought and attention to keep up.

Its probably one of my favorite animated shows of all time, but I have never understood how some people genuinely think its smart. The writing can be incredibly clever and there is a lot of original ideas at play, but its obvious you dont have to be smart to enjoy it. Its just a better Futurama imo

If were talking smart comedies then Frasier will always be the golden standard to me

Also, that copy-pasta is one of my favorites because it captures how some of these fans act perfectly

It's a very well-written and *buurp* thought-provoking show, and is also peepee poopoo butthole not afraid to dive deep into the psyche of *inane gibberish noises* its characters.

I loved S1, but I really fell off hard with the show about midway through 2. S3's opener was a blast, but the next few eps really killed my interest and I just lost interest in finishing the season. I've got Hulu now though, so it's on my list of shows to watch, I feel it deserves another shot.
