Qatar being in the Gold Cup, if my information is correct, I believe that were originally invited to the Copa America tournament, but Qatar later dropped out of the competition, and then accepted an invite to the Gold Cup instead.

Timing the USA game just after the Euro final, I wonder if it was by chance they lined up on the same day?

Either way, I'm looking forward to both games. I'm definitely watching Italy vs. England that day too.

Canada vs. Martinique, that should be interesting one!

As for Panama vs. Qatar, I'm not even sure what to expect from that game. We will find out on Tuesday July 13.

I was reading that Curacao is dropping out of the tournament due to COVID, and is being replaced with Guatemala.

In regards to the schedule change because of Curacao's withdrawl, this is what I found out:

Saturday:

Sunday:
Canada vs. Martinique
United States vs. Haiti
El Salvador vs. Guatemala

So, there's a triple header of games on Sunday, oh my!

Yeah, Mexico had 29 total shots, with zero goals, and Trinidad & Tobago's goalkeeper had a total of 7 saves in the game. Even with all of the stoppage time, which totaled 8.5 minutes for each half [nearly 17 minutes extra], it was not a factor.

The second half of the Panama vs. Qatar game was wild. Despite the 2 hour severe weather delay, it was a very entertaining match during that second 45 minutes.

Qatar going up 1-0, and every time Qatar had the lead, Panama would find a way to get level with Qatar. And at 2-2, Qatar would get a Penalty Shot awarded to them, to get back up to 3-2, only for Panama to ALSO get a Penalty Shot awarded to them a bit later in the match to take the score to 3-3.

I only got a chance to watch the end of Qatar - Panama, but I got to witness both penalties so that was good fun.

Also watched Honduras - Grenada and felt pretty bad for Grenada. I remember saying aloud "Oh no, they're going to bleed another goal" when a pass got intercepted at midfield right after the 3rd goal. Then seconds later Honduras scored their 4th.

The Qatar vs. Panama match surprised me, it was very entertaining.

With Honduras vs. Grenada, I kind of expected Honduras to win, I was thinking maybe 2 or 3 goals, but not 4 myself. Grenada actually had a decent number of good chances in the game, but, they could not convert on them.

Mostly expected results this time, but, the main concern for Mexico was getting a Game 2 win. Also, the current results qualify El Salvador for the Knockout Stage.

I think your issue is that you think of it as the North American conference when that's only part of what CONCACAF is.

Technically Suriname (along with Guyana and French Guiana) is in South America, but yeah nations from other continents compete in different conferences (Australia in Asia, Kazakhstan in Europe etc.)

I know it's also Central America and the Caribbean, but South America has it's own Conference and about half the countries are in that conference then CONCACAF

CONCACAF (North, Central America and Caribbean): 41 Members
CONMEBOL (South America): 10 Members

I would just think that the Countries that are actually in South America would be in that conference is all, especially since they have so few members.

Guyana and Suriname are like Caribbean nations. It's rare that they can even qualify for the Gold Cup. They would just be annihilated and have to pay way more in travel costs to be part of CONMEBOL. They are best served being part of the Caribbean Union (which is part of CONCACAF). French Guiana is part of France and I don't think CONMEBOL has any interest in having something like that. I don't know how many confederations allow as many non-FIFA teams as CONCACAF due to the CFU. Thank colonialism I guess.

As far as Qatar - both CONMEBOL and CONCACAF have guest nations in their tournaments. Qatar has recently played Copa. USA has played in the Copa. Heck USA even hosted Copa*

maybe the short answer is "outside of Mexico everyone in CONCACAF isn't that great at soccer so they all stick together, and USA will host tournaments for them if we get to play against them"

I'll always remember Qatar as being the worst team in the world according to the original FIFA game on the Mega Drive back in 1994. I was astounded when I eventually found out there were a lot of countries worse than them
