Its inclusion as an embellishment here is actually steeped in irony, because the quote was originally an embellishment by a reporter from an interview with Stephen Merchant (who suffers from astigmatism), which went something like;

When someone says "show x would be cancelled if it aired today" they are just trying to get attention. They know what they are saying isn't true.

Dude they literally pulled an episode of the office and community because of non-blackface blackface. Plus tons of michael scott jokes would get it cancelled, but because twitter hasn't got a boner for any of them at this point they haven't yet been pulled.

The UK had/has plenty of similarly "awful" shows as well, that make The Office look child friendly. 99% of people complaining about "cancel culture" are just upset one person on twitter said they didn't like something, or want to generate controversy and get free advertising.
