Do you agree?

""I mean now it would be cancelled. I'm looking forward to when they pick out one thing and try to cancel it. Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, 'Good let them cancel it. I've been paid!'" said Gervais, eyes bulging with imagined riches."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-57317470

So what do you think? Would the show fall victim to the cancelling culture? Or is he just a bitter old man?

They also interviewed one Dr Simon Weaver, a senior lecturer in media and communications at Brunel University in London who basically said "No it wouldn't."

Also what's with the adding "eyes bulging with imaginary riches" part? That's not in the article.

I doubt it, unless theres something Im missing from the later seasons since I didnt really watch those much. Yeah, racism, sexism, and ableism come up in the show, but theyre always depicted as a source of cringe.

This topic isn't about the admittedly impressive Dr. Simon Weaver.

It's a joke from Gervais' old radio show that I snuck in to check whether people are actually reading the article.

Its inclusion as an embellishment here is actually steeped in irony, because the quote was originally an embellishment by a reporter from an interview with Stephen Merchant (who suffers from astigmatism), which went something like;

Interviewer: So the Office DVDs are selling quite well.
Merchant: "Yes I suppose they are," said Merchant, eyes bulging with imagined riches.

Maybe it would, maybe it wouldnt? Seems to be that blackface is the primary thing that would cause certain episodes of TV to get erased by the major streaming services, but other stuff seems to be fair game, for now anyway.

No it wouldn't. There are far worse (content wise) shows on TV.

When someone says "show x would be cancelled if it aired today" they are just trying to get attention. They know what they are saying isn't true.

So they found a token "no it wouldn't" guy?

Dude they literally pulled an episode of the office and community because of non-blackface blackface. Plus tons of michael scott jokes would get it cancelled, but because twitter hasn't got a boner for any of them at this point they haven't yet been pulled.

But you think a twitter mob couldn't lock in on any of several dozen michael scott jokes and say "UH, NBC? How was THIS ever on air?!?'

The UK had/has plenty of similarly "awful" shows as well, that make The Office look child friendly. 99% of people complaining about "cancel culture" are just upset one person on twitter said they didn't like something, or want to generate controversy and get free advertising.

People say "Imagine if someone did that now" and I'm over here saying "Imagine if someone did this then"

You couldn't get away with anything that we see now in the old days.

But who cares about government censorship, threats of jail time, and shit like that when now we deal with whining on Twitter.

Hell, some of the old media that we say you couldn't get away with now only survived back then because people misunderstood it.

It's hilarious how the people up in arms about cAnCeL cUlTuRe act as though people who call out problematic things in media are some aliens that just came to Earth in the last year or two, as opposed to having grown up with the same media as everyone else. Do you seriously think in this day and age, that The Office - one of the most popular sitcoms ever - has just flown under the radar?

It's most likely impossible to create any show without at least one loudmouth dimwit on Twitter pounding the metaphorical table about why it deserves to be banned and for anyone connected with it to be guillotined in a public square. But you can't plonk a martyr's crown on your head just because someone, somewhere, complained or might complain about your show.

How is it stupid? It's pretty real.

They are erasing jokes and episodes from old media. They fire and punish people for videos and content from 5-10+ years ago. Twitter mobs ruin lives with no remorse or concern for context.

As usual the internet makes up their own meanings

Just to be clear, I did not say The Office would be cancelled if it were made today. That makes no sense. It's still around. This is my actual quote. "Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I said, 'Good, let them cancel it. I've been paid!'" Clearly a joke.

Doesnt seem like he said anything about it being cancelled now
