Honest question.. Out of all the entry-level positions you can pick I never understood why people would choose to serve that's an industry completely based on the way random strangers are feeling at that moment in time you can bust your ass and not even get a tip at all a lot of days you work and not only did not break even but be in the hole because your base pay is like $3 an hour or something ridiculous which is just a holdover from the forties and fifties or something anyway

People take work they can get to pay for things that they need or want.
It's not that difficult to grasp tbh.
There's plenty of jobs out there that few people would dream of doing, but they do them for the cash.

Unless you've ever met someone that dreamt of scrubbing shit out of sewers?

yeah every server tries to act like they make hundreds a night yet they're leaving out on the days where they barely make anything or the fact that most of the money is in cash which sucks and they're losing a lot by it not being taxed

Most servers don't report tips. Most businesses don't make them because good luck finding servers if you do lol

It not being taxed is a check mark in the plus column.

@Giant_Aspirin And it's a skill you learn on the job, no unpaid intern type shit. A great one to have when in between professions as well, and you usually only work a 4-6 hour shift. Until Covid at least

part of it is learned on the job, yeah. but 'people skills' are something that largely can't really be taught. know how to read people and best respond to them is an invaluable life skill that can take you very far if you apply it correctly. it's something i admire about my brother because that's not one of my strong suits <_<

The highlight of the server jobs I did

-Very good rapport with my coworkers
-Potentially amazing hourly, my most hourly was around 36/37 for a 5 hour shift
-Take home cash
-shorter shifts meant more free time.

The lowlights

Soul crushing customers. The kind that you pray crash on the way home. Thanos was right when he said half the population had to go, hopefully it was those that were rude to servers.

I asked one of my Servers why he did that and not Bartend, and he said he could make more money serving. Having said that he very good. In fact pretty much all of our servers are great....and we are going to lose on on about the worst day of the year to lose her.

Anyway, I Service Bartend and sometimes Bartend, and I do prefer that.

Some people may want to pursue a career in hospitality.
It can lead to being a bartender or barista.
The quality of being a waiter depends on the venue. Here in Australia there's a decent minimum wage and at the bar I work at anyone being a fuckwit will be told to leave and management will fully defend the staff.

That is very important. Where I am at now, the management will probably always support the staff...we just haven't been tested on that, as it's generally not kind of place. The manager can air dirty laundry in front of guests a bit too much.

I have worked at a place where the management would not support the staff, in the place was full of fuckwits, and it sucked. At that place the management basically treated it's staff as lambs to the slaughter...unless you some form of favorite.
